Recently i got a chance to sit on my firnebd's Nissan Murano. Nice big car. With rear cctv and air-bags all round. What interest me most is the navigation system. You can route out any place in singapore including malaysia. Can even store memory address.

 

Damn good a tool in car....especially travelling to malaysia.

 

Does any bros known how much does one cost? Is it feasible to install onto a Mit Lancer. And the updated clip costs how much?

perhaps look into navigation software that could be used on PDAs, XDAs or mobile... at least there are portable...

i got to noe that is about 1.5k inclusive of the system and it is portable and mobile. I can say tat when u out from yur vehicle u can bring down.

Ya Ya Ya.....something like this one. My wife sat a Mer Cab in germany with these systems. Apparently the Nav sys is connected to the car milage and direction. Make a wrong turn and a computerise voice will warn the driver and re-route for him. And that was 5 years ago.

 

I wonder does this system wokrs the same way.

I got a Garmin one that comes with S'pore/M'sia maps. The model is Streetpilot C320. Any car can use this as it just needs power. It also runs on battery (8-hours on a full charge) so you can use it for walking or cycling..etc. You can easily transfer this from car to car.

I got it at a shop called Perfect Watch at the ground floor of Sim Lim Square. I paid $1180 for it. It works great. Can search by HDB block number, store many of your favourite locations, preloadeed POI's (points of interests) like food, entertainment, tourist spots...etc. The reception is pretty good and I have no problems getting satellite fixes.

 

It guides you by voice. Eg "drive 1km then keep left" > "turn left in 200 metres" > "turn left". So basically there is no way that you can get lost. Even if you miss the turn, it will recalculate a new route within 3 seconds and guide you there. The built-in speaker is very loud and the speech is very clear. You can even choose American or British accent if you want English. Other European languages available as well.

 

There is also a speedometer (GPS based so very accurate) and trip computer that calculates yiour max and average speed and various distances.

 

I went with the Garmin brand becos that is a big worldwide enthusiast community and you can download maps for free. Especially here in S'pore/M'sia, the maps are very good. In fact more users say it's better than any map you can buy. In any GPS system, that is the most important thing. Lousy map=lousy navigation.

 

It comes with a cigarette lighter charger and a windscreen and dashboard mounts. I didn't like the setup and modified it for a neater installation.

Things that bothered me:

1) The charging/power cable running from the cigarette lighter to the device is too ugly to look at on a daily basis

 

2) I can't charge my phone or do anything with the 12v socket when I'm using the device. I want the socket to be free

 

3) When I pull the key out, current is still being drawn to charge the device and it forces me to dismount it even if I don't feel like it

 

So I went to my mechanic to ask him to hide the charging cable and here's a little of the process:
