Can anyone enlighten me? When do we really need an amplifier?

Is it from the wattage of the component? How many watts above do I need one?

Clueless abt ICE

your HU do have a amp,but it enough to drive your stock speaker or normal speaker.

get a additional amp will enhance the sound quality.kind of boost up your sound also.

After the amp,if changin speaker, get the one which the power rating suit your amp.

an audio shop will be able to recommend you accordingly, unless you DIY,then maybe some other bros can advise.

First you have to decide what's your objective? What kind of music you listen to? Do you need to play loud? Do you want to enter competition? The amount of space you have in the car? Are you willing to do extensive mods to your car? What's the budget?

Only then will you have a clue to which direction you want to go.

Better still, join us on Wed meetup where you can sample many different setups so that you can form your own opinion.

First step you should take is to find out exactly what you have in your stock system in terms of your:

- Head Unit

- Amp, if any

- Front speakers

- Rear speakers

- any other equipment

Their brand, model, capability in terms of power handling, etc.

when it comes to "buying a amp & speakers" budget is something you must already have in mind as mentioned by slonez and kwongming.

an amplifier, the range in terms of price ranges from a merley S$100 to all the way S$XX,000.

A door speaker, similiar to the amplifier, ranges from S$80 to a high-end focal or rainbow system easily more than S$5000 (rainbow is more than S$xx,000).

To summarised, the question is, how deep is your pocket/budget on ICE?

Maybe, you give us a range such as for amp/speaker, S$XXX - S$XXXX. Then we could see what would be suitable for you. Of course, you need to share with us what type of music you're going to listen to....vocals or blasting....

Cheers

we always ask newbies "first tell me your budget".

well i was a newbie, and i was asked that question. sometimes this question may not elicit useful information.

to a newbie, it goes like this:

there is sound A (cheaper one), sound B (mid-priced), sound C (high-end).

we should ask the newbie, what kind of sound u want? first, of course, newbie has to listen to all 3 types.

and after that, we advise him on the price range to get that type of sound, and the price ranges to get the other types of sounds.

so we shouldn't really begin with the question like please give us a range for how much u want to spend on amp. what's important is, 1) listen to sound using HU as amp (e.g. slonez car), listen to cheap, mid-range and high-end amps etc. THEN see the prices.

an original "budget" like mine of $1500 blew up to $2500 (pricing for new items, not used) because i later realised that you can't get sound B with money A. the maths just don't add up. if u want sound B, u die die have to target say $2500. if u target $1500 u might get sound A. and if newbie compares the 2 sounds and is willing to fork out $1000 more, then this idea of "budget" has changed.

very true [nod]. ha ha this same thing happened to me and i believe many others too.

When i started ICEing i had almost zero knowledge and zero ICE crazy friends. So to me an amp was a amp and speakers where just speakers. With even cheap ICE being rather ex compared to other car related parts intial costs can indeed subconsiously force one to take the cheaper route. [:/]

Now that i have been exposed to real ICE (or some of u would say poisoned) i realise that my system can surely NOT give wat i would like. Thus i would have to fork out additional $$ to change my system components. [sly][sweatdrop]

If u ask me a budget is a good thing to help keep things in check. But a new ICEer must sit in a listen to cars of a similar budget range and equipment if possible. If happy listen to the next level and if $$$ permits keep uping the level till u are comfortable. Else save up $$$ or try not to listen to other better setups.

ICE is a never ending journey. There is always something better. Of course if i were to do it all over again i will listen to my desired setup...save up enough money do it one shot and just sit back and enjoy the music.

But having said all this i must admit that there is some sort of bitter sweet joy in getting conned at ICE shops, getting the wrong stuff, screwing up the wiring etc etc [:p] With each wrong step u get better [thumbsup]

My personal advice never rush to do ur ICE or any car mod for that matter. Take ur time and do it only when u are sure what u want.

Cheers

It is like going through NS / BMT...some confinements, some tekan sessions, late nite turn outs...not fun when u actually do them but the process when u look back brings back memories and a whole new learning experience.

Same for ICE, i enjoy my music as much as i enjoy the process. Of cse when it hits the wallet not so nice but thats the price to pay [dizzy]

Hi I did mine by changing the speaker first to rainbow pair.

Just the front ones, cost about $350 (Promotion)

Now I am @ Chop Yong Mog along Upper East Coast Road installing a Blunkplunt amp and mid range costing $650...

Heart pain but so long you are happy,it is k la.

Cos I am on a Jazz. I will choose active sub to be slotted under my seat for next change.

Cheers

Need some advice, say I'm into SQ, and I want an amp that's more for that purpose. An installer recommended Helix, is that an amp suitable for SQ? The other option would be Genesis amps, which are of course better amps but more expensive. I've heard of people here recommending Butler amps as well, what's the price range of those and who sells them? So far haven't encountered any installer selling Butler amps yet.
