Is the statement true? Heard that some distributer uses mineral oil for the first few servicing of VAG cars.

Not sure also, but heard from one of the SE. He said this is recommended by the manufacturer..

But I guess our weather here is very different from Europe..is synthetic better to be used for a car that is to be run-in?

Yes, it is confirmed that VW uses a special factory run in oil which is mineral based to run in the engines. First 15k no need to change. Will enable the piston rings to seat in properly. If you use syn, its too effective in lubrication that it does not allow the pistons to "wear" in properly and will affect engine smoothness and fuel consumption later on in the engine's life. FYI, this is a special mineral oil and you will not be able to buy it anywhere. [thumbsup]

Not sure about other VAG cars, my Skoda (from JTA) required oil change after 1500km run in. From then, you can choose to use Syn oil. Dunno whether CA practice that ??

Thats what JTA advocates becos they want to earn more money. My car also ex-JTA, nobody got to touch my engine oil till 15K thats for sure. [shakehead][;)]

I think you're right. When I call CA for the 10K servicing (according to JTA schedule), they confused.gifconfused.gif. They said only need servicing at 15K.

Hi Raptor,

I think its still not such a good idea to go for 15k servicing after the initial run in period. In our climate plus the frequent start stop traffic, I think its better to go for 10k with synthetic oil. Thats just my kiasu mentality acting up again... [cool]

True abt the running in part, but you do not need the so called special mineral oil....any good mineral oil will do like the Castrol one...thumbsup.gifthumbsup.gif

and 15k is really too long....generally the piston ring will seat in properly during 1-2k.....so oil change to syn at 5k should be OK....nod.gif
