Andrewkb Neutral Newbie April 21, 2003 Share April 21, 2003 Hi, Wat I'll mention below is PURELY based on my needs and judgement ... of course, different people have different needs, so please dun flame me. Before I settle for the Stream, I've looked at the Praire (CHEAP & GOOD)! and a few others ... I'll just touch on the Stream. Of course, due to budget, I set my mind on the 1.7L first. Went to test drive at Kah Motor and something tell me it's not right ! The engine is noisy and I need to rev to 4000+rpm to get reasonable speed !(1.7L stream is 1350kg heavy). It's shiok, but I believe that's no the way I drive everyday. Well, to make a better conclusion, I get my wife to test drive. She had the same remark. Also, it seems that the 1.7L rear suspension setup is softer ... both myself and magazine claimed so, but Kah said it's the same. So, I took the 2.0L out for a drive and I must tell you, it's a totally different animal at all ! VERY VERY QUIET engine but powerful ! With tiptronic somemore ! I can't express myself more here, but U've to drive the 1.7L then the 2.0L to know the difference. I must say that it offers a very serene & quiet (after I soundproof the car) ride. Power when needed :-) In terms of fuel consumption I am getting ~10km/L or 9.5km/L for mostly city driving. 1/2 tank fetch me 250km, full tank fetch me ~500km. In terms of reliability for the 2.0L, one of the article claim that the iVTEC engine NEED NOT GO THROUGH ANY MAJOR SERVICING other than oil change, spark plug change for 120,000km !!!!! Andrewkb Neutral Newbie April 21, 2003 Share April 21, 2003 - space- any other areas I've decided to reply this portion on a new post since it mentioned about other MPVs. Personally I feel that the Stream is quite BASIC in terms of equipment ! The best is still Praire ! For ~$90+K, you get basically EVERYTHING ! Digital dash, numerous hooks, etc .. The 2nd best will be Picnic, for it's size. 3rd will be Stream. However, in terms of driving the car, the driver seat for Picnic/Praire sits too high .... the leg gotta be flexed a bit more due to the high floor. The Stream sits like a normal sedan. Summary: Stream 1.7L Pro: Nice look, with bodykit, BEST Con: Lack of power, rough engine, Limited last row space Stream 2.0L Pro: Good 2.0L iVTEC engine, but slightly poor low end torque .. city traffic jam is a killer. Con: Limited last row space Picnic 2.0L Pro: Superb last row space, superb low end torque for city traffic. Con: Sit too high. Praire 2.0L Pro: Everything U can think of is in this car ! Con: Limited last row space and CVT drives funny ...

Jonnie Neutral Newbie April 21, 2003 Author Share April 21, 2003 have not tried the 2.0l but have heard enough to say that it must have been a much better ride than the 1.7l. main concern is on the increase in rd tx and insurance. calculated to be abt 500-600 increase. rd tax = + 450, ins = + 100-150. the 2.0l version is also 10k more although there are additional features (like aircon vents for the last row). for that $, i would have gone for picnic which is slightly cheaper than the 2.0l. have tot abt praire b4 but the interior and exterior is quite difficult to accept. too boxy and the interior is very van-ish. even my dad does not like it! price and equipment wise, praire is very good. picnic have been always my ideal MPV (my wife has the same view). Looks, size, power is all there. But considering that on a weekday, i need only to ferry my wife + daughter and only on a occassional wkend that my parent come along, i do not really need such a 'big' car (although i wouln't mind having one!).KM was also willing to give more $ for my trade-in car compared to BM. In the end, Stream 1.7 was a more logical choice in terms of cost. performance wise, i would agree that Stream 1.7 is not comparable to Stream 2.0 or Picnic 2.0 but having only to ferry a relative light load, it should be sufficient. care to give more comments on the performance and reliability of the car so far? Jonnie Neutral Newbie April 21, 2003 Author Share April 21, 2003 seen the wish. exact replicate of stream but with a Toyota badge. overall looks is ok. space wise is quite similar to stream. the dashboard is quite sporty. the front bumper area is not too nice although the lambs are OK. have the 'W' logo iso 'T'. another problem is that it is via PI iso BM. price is not too far away from stream 2-3k? Andrewkb Neutral Newbie April 21, 2003 Share April 21, 2003 Hi, Again, I've not driven a 1.7L for extended period of time (only test drive). However, I've seen A LOT of 1.7L being driven aggressively! Whereas, the 2.0L are normally the "slower" pickup of the pack. I guess, it's either, the 2.0L doesn't need to rev so high, or it's heavy. BTW, 1.7L is 100kg lighter than the 2.0L For me, most of the time, it's me, my wife and my daughter in the car, only special occasion it gets fully loaded. With 8passenger max one time. One cool point about the 2.0L iVTEC is that, the Variable Timing Control actually variables according to the load. So, when the car is fully loaded, it drives better ! It actually picks up better than when I drives with my wife only ! HOWEVER, like I said before, the 2.0L is poor at low end rpm .. so stucked in traffic jam and you'll cry! The Picnic will be better in such situation. At ~10km/L for the 2.0L, no complain so far :-)
Jonnie Neutral Newbie April 21, 2003 Author Share April 21, 2003 hi andrew do u have the cover installed on the last row?how does that really work? is it a removable 'beam' that you have put b4 pulling the cover to reach the end of the car?
Andrewkb Neutral Newbie April 21, 2003 Share April 21, 2003 Yes. The cover is inclusive on the 2.0L. For 1.7L, you gotta purchase extra ... cost ~$300. What it does is, you can pull, hook and cover the "boot" area ... The cover is concealled and self-retracted into the "beam". However, when you have it installed, you can't use the last row of seat. You'll have to remove the "beam" and hide it near the end of the car (there's a place built to hide it nicely).
Modeldriver Neutral Newbie April 22, 2003 Share April 22, 2003 sob sob I really must drive more light footedly - my mileage has NEVER hit 10km/L.
Andrewkb Neutral Newbie April 22, 2003 Share April 22, 2003 Well, wat I did was to maintain low rpm when cruising ... that'll really depends on driving pattern ... BTW, this car really suck petrol when stucked in traffic jam ! It's more of a highway cruiser than a city runabout ! ↡ Advertisement
