OPEL TWINTOP

yeah, the French seems to have some problem getting the auto gear right which is the cause of the sluggish pickup. but they are good at bringing the ride to a cruising speed better than others, even as good or better than the luxury brands.

Opel may be better, I'm not sure, since it is auto not MTA in this model.

i would like to bring up a point that has been missed here so far, but is very important and should be taken into consideration.

the twintop is strictly 2 seater.

the other CCs are made with back seats (albeit some of them will be very squeezy in the back).

i think that would turn away a majority of prospective buyers. unless it's going to be a 2nd car, or your life only revolves around 2 people at any one time. [;)]

don't discuss handling and performance first. if you can get over this 2 seater design, then go on to talk about the rest of the car. [;)]

honestly speaking, from my experience, if the car has only 2 doors then make it 2 seats. if there are 4/5 seats, then better have 4 doors. cos its really too troublesome already (unless maybe like RX8 got a mini rear door or something [laugh] )

Thanks for all the advice and suggestions! Really has given me food for thought..

Is the Opel TwinTop really just a 2-seater? Seeing the pictures of the car on the Opel website, it looks like a 4-seater.

Also, do you have a ballpark figure for the Ford Focus CC?

P/S: Thanks for the recommendation Sony! If I'm getting it, I'll surely get the SE's name from you!

There r 2 2 Twintops, Opel Tiagra Twintop and Astra Twintop.

Tiagra is strictly 2 seater. while Astra Twintop is 2+2.

Unlilke 206/207cc, the rear seats tho cramp, you can still sit small-size average sg adults comfortably.

u sure or not...

maybe u r the tall type.

if u say Peugeot 206/207 impossible to squeeze ppl i agree.

Astra,307 and Megane CC still can la...i tried b4...

but obviously the bigger size/taller ones will have problem.. i think maybe max for ppl who r abt 1.7-1.75m skinny ppl. fatter ones maybe 1.6m+

[shocked] Sure or not ? If you can squeeze your friends there, it would only mean one thing. Your friends are very short, have very short legs or are handicapped ! [laugh][laugh][laugh]

Okay, okay, sorry lah.....I understand you can squeeze people at the back but it would be very uncomfortable. Short short trip maybe can but longer one....very siong !

The Astra Twintop is the best looking car among its prime competitors, mainly the Megane & Focus Cabrios.

Although 120K can buy plenty of other lifestyle cars like the Golf GTi, Focus ST, Mini Cooper etc...

most definitely would rather get the golf GTI

Standard advise, test drive all 3 and decide for yourself.

Okay, I've finally test-drove all 3, and here's my experience.

Megane CC: Great interior styling; you know you're definitely in a Conti car when you get in. The leather is firm yet supple, and the finishing is superb. Of course, most new cars look like that, but somehow the Megane stands out among all 3 with its interior. The glass roof is the best attraction, because being a coupe, when the roof is up, the interior can feel a little claustrophobic. But with the glass roof, that feeling isn't there. The 2-piece roof also means the retraction is less cumbersome with fewer visible moving parts; it's also the fastest. But this results in a bigger boot overhang. Handling-wise, it's decent enough for cruising, with little body roll. But pick-up is a little lacking, probably because of the weight of the car.

Opel Twintop: Looks-wise it's fairly decent, especially with the roof up. Has a solid feel about it, like all Opels. But it struck me as a little too Teutonic, with none of the flair you'd want from a cabriolet. The interior is well laid out, but again lacks the flamboyance and attitude of the Megane. The main drawback for me was the 3-piece roof. Although this meant that the roof can be folded into a smaller package unlike the Megane, the retraction process left me somewhat wide-eyed. There were so many visible, greasy moving parts; I felt like I was watching an Autobot in action! On the road, it was again comfortable enough for cruising, but the engine sounded a little strained at higher revs.

Peugeot 307CC: Smallest of the 3, but with enough attitude and looks to hold its own. Seems like the biggest attraction was the LED lights at the rear, since the SE kept pointing it out. Leg-room at the rear was also the poorest of all 3. The interior was also quite attractive, just like the Megane. Kudos to the French! From the rear, the 307CC really betrays its cabriolet function with its rather large boot, but with the roof up, it strikes a unique pose. The transmission for the 307CC appears to be the quickest among all 3, with upshifts being short and rapid, probably due to its Porsche Tiptronic underpinnings. Its smaller size also allowed it to be quick into corners.

Conclusion: The Megane CC stands out with its combination of generous boot-space, decent enough handling, well-appointed interior and of course, its glass roof! The leg-room at the rear is also marginally better than the other 2. But this could be because the glass roof made it appear so! [thumbsup]

This is a show car, meaning, you drive slowly to show other people.

This is more like a rich tai tai car. Cruise around Orh-cho-lood wearing over-sized shades and scarf wrap around her hair [pirate] .Park at hotel have brunch go nearby shopping. U know...that kind of car.

Rich Tai Tai won't care whether it's 9sp or 10sp, can shift or can sh*t. As long as auto can liao. Pick up slow nevermind, faster than bus good enough. Most important of all when the tin top is up must have plenty of luggage space to put shopping bags. Must shop in style.

My sis-in-law driving a 307CC. Coming 3rd years only, can really see the built quality cant last in our kind of wheather here. Black plastic/rubber part colour change from black to grey liao. Some more the service standard is very bad.

But must say, it is good looking car.

We were shopping for a coupe-cabrio too. The mentioned 3 were in our list basically they are within our mean. All the other carbio are out of our reach.

Anyway, we test driven the Peugeot And Opel (give Renault a miss coz 2 friends both driving Renault strongly advise me not to buy it!) We also saw a few advert selling few mths old Renault CC, never check them though.

As its our second car, HP,4AT,Torque,etc were not a conern at all. It's just how she likes it that matters (of course, if my pocket permits).

We finally selected the TwinTop for below reason:

* it has a wider legroom at rear. Caution: the rear is strictly for small kids. forget about squeezing any adults for any comfy ride.

* It has a 3pc folding roof. which make it biggest boot space even when roof is down. Maybe due to such, the Peugeot seem too low even for my 3yr old girl??

* Twintop not so common on the road.

* Peugeot somehow appear more for the yuppies than a mother ferrying child to school and for marketing use.

I'm glad that you found the cabrio you like. [:)]

Correct me if I'm wrong, but according to the catalogue for both the Twintop and the Megane, the boot space is 440L and 490L respectively, with the roof up. But with the roof down, it's 205L and 190L respectively. So you're right to say that the boot space is the biggest, but only when the roof is down. For me, the Megane's glass roof was the killer blow. After seeing it, very hard to look at the Twintop or the 307CC without comparing the roofs. [:p]
