Dear all,

My car doesn't use the full 4 litres of engine oil when i go for its servicing.

As a result, i usually have abt 1 l or 800ml left. However, my concern is tht if i were to mix like shogun and idemitsu (both w30), is this adviseable?

Thanks.

Basically it's fine to mix any leftover oil from the same brand but not advisable for different brand oil. This may cause additives crash thus lower the boundary protection.

Basically engine oil formulation is pretty high tech stuffs which exact formulation is highly guarded. Oil company spends millions to formulate & test the additives package for solubility, anti-wear/anti-foam, oxidation and thermal stability.

Thus any injection of foreign fluid with different base oil and additives package "might" upset the delicate balance of the host oil.

Look at it this way, if you are using crappy cheapo engine oil and decided to added a quart of RL engine oil to bump up it's anti-wear additives level, no problem, how bad can it go.

But if you decided to added 1 quart of leftover whatever oil to 3 quart of expensive RL oil, you are basically taking a risk that the foreign addition will not upset the fine balance of a very well build/tune engine oil. Logical.

Agree with Trex. Same to mix from same brand and same series of the same brand. I won't recomment different series of same brand.

So for e.g., as long as it's Motul Power series, it is OK to mix 05w20 and 10w40.

roger... thks

what is ur opinion on shogun and idemitsu? I was recommended these oils as well as the TRD engine oil as they are said to enhance engine performance?

Also when u mention RL u mean redline correct?

Finally i am driving a 1.5 PI car from japan. Which oil will u recommend?

thanks in advance :)

Bro too me is juz like cooking oil juz different brand that's why the price is different, as long as the oil can fried a chicken wing is good enough is up to different preference to choose the brand ....Most oil manufacurer will said their is the BEST [laugh] I will still Go for Good & "Cheap" oil [laugh] Im used to try different type of oil whenever i go for servicing every 2-3 mths as im always on the road......ive try the MOST Expensive....1L @ $24 as compare to the Cheapest Synthetic @ 1L @ $6 is a waste of $$$ to buy the expensive synth oil my car also cant go any faster still need to change @ 10K.....so nowaday i always go for the "Cheapest" Synthetic Oil still change @ 8-10K [laugh] Well juz my 2 cents of opinion [drivingcar]

If you are not particular about performance, then go ahead and mix...that's my pragmatic view.

But if you are concerned, then stick with the same range - eg API SM or SL...different brands also use different types of base oils and some additive packages may not mix well with different types of base oils.
