Yup. It's kind of messy. Chinese bought the right to rover 25 and 75 (I think) and BMW have the right to the name and the rest don't know to who. But MG is 100% chinese (another co.)

Indeed...especially now that it's gone. They make good cars...but their 'old' charm doesn't attract a lot for younger buyers...especially in the home country where only really old people drive one.

The 2 cars in the center front row are the one I tot would save Rover...but it didn't. The one on the left is a very exciting concept and the one is the Rover 75 V8 (which we didn't get and now being sold in China in the long-wheel base form under Roewe).

It's sad tat Rover had to go when they were beginning to show some interesting cars.

most of the rovers were developed with Honda and were pretty much rebadged Hondas.

The 220 hardly looks Conti in my humble opinion, it is basically a honda civic coupe rebaged as a rover, although it had a turbo and a targa/sun roof.

reliability and the quality of the cars were not something that you would associate with Rovers and therefore they were pretty unpopular with buyers even in the UK.

the only saving grace before the sell out was the MG V8 rear-wheel drive MG ZT, a modified Rover 75.

Neutral Newbie

Actually, I think one of the issues which blighted Rover in its later years was not only that did they use re-badged Honda's, but they were re-badged AND by-then older, underdeveloped honda models. Anyone remember the 620Si? That was the previous (or was it previous-previous?) UK Accord of its time and it was aimed smack at the likes of the first generation A4 and the highly competent e36-generation Bimmer.

The other issue was the positioning of their products in their home market - if I recall correctly, they took aim at the larger and highly competitive market with the not-too-bad but under-sizd and -specced 25 large-ish supermini. Pricing the brutal MG supercar significantly higher than a contemporary (and, if I recall the highly biased comments of one Mr Clarkson, significantly better engineered) 911 I suppose didn't help either.

But that said, yeah, the ZT was a gem. Especially in the ZT-T guise..... [thumbsup]

No more rover now. I think the chinese has renamed it Rowe or some thing like that.

The brand MG Rover has basically been split up..

Shanghai has bought the brand rights to 75 and rename it Roewe 75. They r selling very well here, marketing it on par with BMW and the likes. They change nothing frm the original 75.

Nanjing bought the rest of MG Rover and has not done anything to it (expected). The company, just like the people of this city, is slow, laid back and only make loss-making models. Just look at Fiat!
