am an a frequent visitor to NZ. North island, in my opinion, not much exciting place to visit. If you are excited by the bubbling mudpool aka thermal reserve, there's one real stinko one at whakarewarewa, rotorua. auckland and wellington will have your typical city stuff. check out bay of plenty as well. the only place i can think of that matches its beauty is in tasmania, wineglass bay. and yes of course, lake taupo as well...

don't miss out on cape reinga. this lighthouse is at the northern most tip of the north island. take HWY 1N and 1F along Ninety mile beach. you will NOT regret. you literally can see the green tasman sea and the blue pacific ocean before your eyes [thumbsup]

if you are into scenery i.e. alps, skiing, fantastic lakes, sounds and nature walks through the nature reserve, south island will be the one for you. you might want to take a domestic from auckland and land at christchurch. take a clockwise direction covering christchurch itself, timaru, dunedin, invercargill (check out stewart island... freeze your balls off), te anau, queenstown (do your luge ride, gondola, horse ridding, jetboat, hotair balloon etc etc),milford sound, fox glacier, greymouth then back to christchurch again...

yeah... haaha.... easy to drive there coz the directional signs are fantastic and you cannot find nutcase FnF i-think-i-can-drive-damn-well-singaporeans drivers there...

go brother go !! [:p]

when i am there, i shall take a few pictures of their toyota aurion aka souped up camry... [:p]

speaking of holidays... to each his own but don't bother trying maldives. ta ma de... i went maldives in august and it was so overated. the people there are really nice and polite but seriously, you can go to tioman and the waters there are way better.

i stayed at fullmoon resort, which is supposedly a 5 star establishment on the north male atoll. nothing much. very expensive. one club sandwich costs me USD17 [shocked]

the capital city Male... nothing much too except fish markets and 'come come see my shop' chop shops... one simple fridge magnet was quoted for a freaking USD34!!

lots of koreans and japanese though.... and some royals from UAE i think... walked around the beach covered top to toe...

anywya, back to NZ... yeah... good time to visit in october... mid of spring. lesser gust and rain... lots of sunshine. temperature around 7ish.

for those who have never been to tassie, should check it too... wonderful place !

hi bro,

NZ is tourist friendly all year round. deep winter is in august and if you wouldnt mind the frost and icy gust, go to NZ during this season. you can go skiing at coronet peak or mt hutt, to name a few. NZ has one of the world's best ski resort coz of the favouravble condition i.e. 'softer' snow for skiing.

the season in february will be end summer approaching autumn. temperature around 12ish. but to expect weird weather i.e. 4 seasons in one day. NZ has a largely temperate climate.

if you visit NZ during Summer, you will be able to enjoy a lot of activites like white water rafting, treking, abseiling... that is if you are into outdoors kindda activites.

as for driving in NZ, the signs and roads are world standard. you will not miss them unless you are kookoo.

i suggest recommend you buying a touring map in Singapore and plan your routes well before you fly over there. Lots of people made the major mistake of planning their roads ONLY upon landing in NZ. Big mistake. You plan your routes well in Singapore first to save precious time and possibly lives. You will then be able to drive at a casual pace. For example, if you are driving from Christchurch to say Timaru, you may take rest-stops in between to save your life and enjoy tucked away scenic spots along the way.

always leave your radio on to lsiten out for the latest news on weather changes and road closures. watch out for 'black ice'... these are water frozen over the road surface and you cant see these killers. Always always drive slow and don't baress yourself by driving recklessly in NZ (actually it's everyway, even in Singapore...). The Kiwis (New Zealanders) observe the traffic rules religiously... you will be very very surprised...

for example, when you are driving past a small town, you will see signs requesting you NO to use engine brake coz the noise generated will disturb the livestocks and the folks. traffic will slow down to 50km/h and for god's sake, do not get impatient and start blasting your horn away.... i bet you after you road trip, you will return to Singapore a 'saint-ified' driver...

unlike countries like Japan where you need an International license, NZ doesn't require one. Your Singaporean driving license will do just fine.

2 weeks is just fine. i usually take 3 weeks to cover all the nicks and tucks...

I have tonnes and tonnes of information regarding to dirivng overseas to share with you... dos and don'ts... you ask me that i answer la... gotta run off to the Bank liao... branch opening soon haha and here i am, still forum-ing away at 9.43am [:p]

Beauty and Tasmania should NEVER be in the same sentence. Google "David Boon" (a legend by the way), you'll know what I mean!

guess you are a frequent traveller to NZ too ? not a lot of folks will use the word 'tramping' ! for the sake of folks out there, 'tramping' is a local (well almost) word to describe trekking or bush walking.

singapore has its 'tramping' too... it happens when there's freebies or dirt cheap stuff for sale [:p]
