Any recommendations for a wheelchair?

- brand

- etc.

 

For 60s male, medium built.

 

To fit into the Wish. Preferably without having to pull down any seats.

"Fit into the Wish" as in push the whole wheelchair directly into the car with the man still sitting on it? i think you need to custom build.

Don't think there is any car that will meet your requirement. From what I know....most of such cars has gone thru wheelchair conversion eg. driver on wheelchair, rear passenger on wheelchair, front passenger on wheelchair, etc. One of my ex-classmate and a ex-lecturer drive such cars.

not sure if this is what TS wants, but have seen the Welcab series which is designed with wheel chairs in mind on Ricardo website below ... do check it out ...

Yup. These are the one converted by 3rd party. But you can't really wheel a wheelchair into the car. You will need someone to help the person into the car...then fold and keep the wheelchair.

sorry guys. was not clear with my descriptions.

 

im just looking for a normal wheelchair that can be folded and tucked into the luggage boot area of the car.

 

Even then, there seems to be lots of choices for these "normal" chairs ... ie. 6kg ones, 9kg ones, 12kgs ones, for travels, with adjustable settings, pneumatic tyres, etc.

 

so i'm just wondering what would be a good choice. portable, light, but a little understable perhaps??? or something more sturdy, heavy ...

 

first time buyer, so need advice on what to look out for.

another question: can a normal Wish be converted or retro-fitted to be a Welcab?

 

hope dun need LTA clearance.

 

saw on the toyota website that the front passenger seat can be swivelled.

 

if it can be converted, that'd be cool!

Here are some tips based on past experience :

 

1. Get an aluminum one. A steel one will be very heavy to lug around, or lift up into car. Alu will be more expensive though.

2. If you do not expect the user to move himself/herself using hands, then get those with smaller wheels, which will save space/weight.

3. If the rear wheels are inflatable, it will be more comfortable but more troublesome as you need to top up air every now and then.

4. Finally, it is possible to find a wheelchair that fits into the boot of a Wish. The one I have at home can, even with the Wish's 3rd-row seats up. Worst case, partial folding of 3rd row will solve your problem.

 

Unfortunately, no point for me to tell you where we got our wheelchair - it was purchased in Thailand. But there's a shop at Simon Road that sells quite a lot of stuff, and also one HDB shop across the road from AMK Community Hospital you can try.

Was reading on the necessary/nice to have features on websites, and the points you've mentioned confirmed that.

 

One other thing: I've also asked my salesman the other day if it's possible to convert the front passenger seat to the one like Welcab's? ie. the one that is probably motorised and can be extended out of the car.

 

He said he knows of one place that does such conversion, and will check for me. Also said that should be no issues with LTA.

 

a. Does anyone have any info on such a place where the do conversion? Price estimates?

b. Also, any info that it may not be a problem with LTA?
