In terms of racing heritage and beautiful styling, Merc was, and still is in the same league as Ferrari, Aston Martin, Alfa Romeo, Porsche and Maserati.

Dating back to the '50s, Merc coupes have always been the object of affection of the rich and famous and of movie stars.

In terms of pedigree, BMW and Audi, as luxury marques are nowhere as steeped in tradition and class as a Mercedes Benz.

BMW's most famous car was the 2002, the precursor to the 3 series. It was a boxy thing, nothing to shout about. BMW used to solely make motorcycles, for god's sake. BMW and Audi, although the companies have been around for a long time (in the case of Audi even dating back to Ferdinand Porsche ) are mere Johnny-come-latelys in the luxury coupe world.

Even today in Hollywood, stars don't drive BMW and Audi, they drive SL, SLR, SLK, CL, CLK, among the Ferraris and Bentleys. Rarely do you see a star driving a Bimmer. Britney has several SL and CLKs; Paris Hilton as well. Mercs are immortalised in Janis Joplin's famous '60s song "Mercedes Benz", being mentioned in conjunction with Porsches.

Only in Singapore is Merc considered an "ah pek" car and BMW/Audi, strangely enough, "yuppie" cars. In the US and Europe, you only drive a BMW or Audi because it is less ostentatious and less expensive than a Merc. If you've got it, you'd flaunt it with a Merc, among other more exotic makes (Ferrari, Maserati). I haven't seen any rap and hip hop videos with BMWs and Audis in the background butI have seen plenty with Cadillacs, Mercs, Ferraris, Roll Royces, Land Rover, Humvee, Lamborghini, Maserati.

Sorry for talking so much cxxk. It seems that we in Singapore, a small country, also have a small mind. Perhaps because of our Jap car and 4 cyl "ricer" heritage, we don't know what true class is.

I don't know what class is all about if you equate class to Hollywood stars driving that car.

I only know what is a better engineered car and which car gives better driving enjoyment.

I agree with you that Singaporeans have a small mind but it seems that many Singaporeans like Mercedes more than BMW and Audi so perhaps you're missing a point?

And btw I drive a car with inline 6 cylinder engine and not a 4 pot [:)]

BMW has over taken Merc for 2 years in a row already (correct me if i am wrong) as the most popular luxury make, and Audi fast coming up. What does this mean? Does this mean that in Singapore the population of towkays is dwindling and population of yuppies is increasing? No, this merely means that more lao bengs and towkays are switching to BMWs and Audis from Mercs. So the old image of BMW and Audi being the sole territory of yuppies is fast fading. Nowadays you can see many 3 and 5 series in HDB car parks as well as lining the streets in Geylang. These new converts to BMW and Audi are desperately trying to shed their cheena towkay image by buying BMW and Audi. That has got to be bad for the brand image.

Anyway the popular Mercs in S'pore are the E-class, real towkay cars. I also wouldn't touch those with a flagpole... well, maybe an AMG E-class I would. But certainly not the bread and butter E-class.

In the case of the sleek high end Mercs, I still feel that they can beat anything out of Bavaria, maybe not in terms of engineering or driving pleasure, but in terms of prestige and style.
