Solar Turbocharged May 11, 2008 Share May 11, 2008 personally my take, unless its from prestigious uni like the other bro said, insead, else bother.. anyway career life in sg is short..45? the returns of investment dun seem worth if one day kanna retrench and nobody wanna hire u cos u are 'old' (at 45) and 'over qualified'. unless of coz, u are already 'there' in the company and want it to enhance further your career/knowledge
Kelpie 2nd Gear May 11, 2008 Share May 11, 2008 IMHO; by the way, don't know how young you are or whether you're working in the govt or private sector; a MBA is a liability if you're still a young graduate and who is not currently holding a senior managerial position. A double or triple degree in other specialization would be better. Your time, your money, your choice. Regards,

Last time, MBA courses where got young chaps attend one . Nowadays, no working experience also can take up MBA . When I interviewed those younger folks with MBA, One of my favourite question is always "why you want to take a MBA?" . Mind you, many FTs job applicants got MBAs but I don't give it a damn . So MBA typically took a shorter time to complete isn't it. If you want to switch, it makes even more sense to go for a basic degree in Finance 1st. MBA are just TCSS most of the time. My senior bosses told me that they usually go MBA for "connection" and "networking" and they're very choosy on the kind of MBA programme. They don't want to waste time doing the same course with people like you (sorry to say that). Regards,

Tploh Clutched May 11, 2008 Share May 11, 2008 hey guys... im thinking of doing my MBA in the near future... currently holding a bachelor in com sci... anyone have any comment on whether local uni like NUS/NTU or overseas like UWA Suggest you to take up a PHD instead ( note : it is a PHD, not a PhD ) from University of Society, because that's what I would hire only. P = Poor H = Hungry D = Desperate Many MBAs can talk, but cannot deliver. My PHD sure get the job done one.
Tploh Clutched May 11, 2008 Share May 11, 2008 Agreeing with Kelpie that MBA is more for networking than content. My Bachelor prof once showed me his exam papers for his MBA student, which was exactly the same as the exam I took in Bachelor. He told me the difference is in the working experience, of the MBA students and hence the expectation is higher for more all-rounded, mature and well thought through answers. Kelpie 2nd Gear May 11, 2008 Share May 11, 2008 haha good point.. 1. Having said those, I was once a student too and I know how you feel. If you think by attending a MBA can widen your horizon and you can manage to get a good class with those experienced executives, you may benefit from it too. Just don't treat it like a shortcut or a step stone to high paying job. Actually, if you are rich man son or father has many businesses to manage or intend to start a business, you may also consider it. Afterall, the rich people can do whatever they like . 2. The clue is try to be humble and mingle with them, who knows one of them might be your furture boss or colleague through "networking" . Kelpie 2nd Gear May 11, 2008 Share May 11, 2008 How about executives working in stat boards/civil service? Do you think it's worth going for MBA? I doubt our PM did a MBA. IMHO, govt sector is very paper conscious one and they only recognize a few of those MBAs. You may want to check which are those that are recognized in teh 1st place. When I was doing NS in Mindef, many SAF officers took MBA lesson with NUS. If you're a scholar, no need MBA or PhD also can be at the top. To me, I always see MBA as an enrichment programme, not so much an academic qualification. Some of these senioor bosses only know how to TCSS one (but with sense) and hardly write. Bring course work back to office and get Secretary to type for them . Regards,

As for what they teach in MBA, it is basically like what some of the MCFers have been saying, its replying the answer through your working experience (so usually have an edge if you work outside before). An example will be like what Harvard did to their programme, whereby the students will do case studies everyday..Mind you, its not just simple cases, but real life cases and you do it everyday every minute for the programme duration
