PM Lee had to correct her maths: 'I think you have one zero too many.' [laugh][laugh]

Not one zero too many. It's three zeroes too many. If she's referring to percentage, it should have been 0.1% instead of 0.001%. 0.001 is the fraction of the population, not the percentage of the population.

Mr Lee was born on 10 February 1952 and completed his schooling in Singapore. He studied at the University of Cambridge, graduating with a Degree in Mathematics and a Diploma in Computer Science. He also obtained a Masters in Public Administration from the Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University.

Chee Siok Chin found guilty of contempt

CHEE Siok Chin, the sister of Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) chief Chee Soon Juan, has been found to be in contempt of court - and will be sentenced on Monday.

Dr Chee, who will be represented by veteran politician JB Jeyaretnam, will have his case heard then - as Mr Jeyaretnam was not in town yesterday.

The Chee siblings were asked to show cause as to why they should not be charged for contempt, for their behaviour earlier this week in a hearing to determine the damages they and the SDP need to pay Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew for defaming them two years ago.

Ms Chee - represented by SDP's lawyer M Ravi - had her case heard yesterday. Mr Ravi argued that charges of contempt of court should be brought against parties immediately after they happen, instead of being held over until the end of the hearing.

'It is as though a football referee issued players with red cards to leave the field after the game has ended,' he said.

He also asked to be given two weeks to look into Ms Chee's case. But Justice Belinda Ang said that 'scandalising and insulting behaviour directed at the court, and in particular, attacks on the court's impartiality must be promptly and firmly dealt with'.

Justice Ang then found Ms Chee 'guilty of contempt in the face of the court', for the numerous times she questioned its impartiality. Ms Chee had said, among other things, that Justice Ang's rulings 'have eroded my confidence in my being given a fair trial in your court'.

She also told Justice Ang that she needed to uphold justice, 'not just have those in mere words, but really to practise this upholding of justice as Supreme Court judge'.

Justice Ang said: 'Effectively, what you have said, Ms Chee, is that I have not only prejudged this case, I rubber stamp every application made by the plaintiffs (PM Lee and MM Lee) in this court, from the start of the proceedings.'

Mr Ravi asked that he be allowed to address the court on Monday on the appropriate sentence to be meted out to his client. Justice Ang agreed to adjourn Ms Chee's sentencing to Monday morning, and will hear Mr Ravi's submissions before hearing Dr Chee's case.

The Chees could be jailed and/or fined. The last case of contempt involved Dr Chee himself in March 2006 - when he was sentenced by Justice Lai Siu Chiu to one day in jail and fined $6,000.

Justice Lai imposed a jail sentence on Dr Chee then 'to serve as a warning to others who chose to go down (Dr Chee's) path'. 'Fines as the penalty for contempt of court of this nature will no longer be the norm,' she said.

Dr Chee, after hearing part of his sister's case yesterday, suddenly decided that he might want Mr Ravi to represent him instead - and asked to be allowed to confer with Mr Ravi. After a short break, Dr Chee decided that he would stick with Mr Jeyaretnam and have his case heard on Monday.

Dr Chee will have to answer for the times he questioned the court's impartiality. He made specific attacks on the judiciary when he said: 'Justice has been gagged, bound up, kicked, raped, quartered, and then, at the last moment, the dagger plunged right through.'

He had also said: 'I have to take issue with your (Justice Ang's) position as a judge and what you have done, as well as the decisions you have made in this courtroom. To that extent, I will fight you with every fibre of my being for the sake of justice.'

===============================

I heard abt this but i guess there's no point for him to do it cos end of it, what is the value of a doctorate in maths...unless one wanna be a professor. One thing is he must have contemplated on it...cos he is so good in it.
