i think i saw this S5 parked along river valley rd last week.

it was black in colour.

it caught my attention because very seldom i see an Audi coupe.

i was driving at the opposite lane and tried to see the model but it wasn't clear, but i saw a red badge and i just did a search.

it should be the S5.thumbsup.gif

fundamentally, Vees are suppose to be smoother and more compact than in line engines. and especially for in-line 6s, that 2 extra culinders can cause a lot of vibration to the engine, and due to its length, its harder to get a good fit into the engine bay as well. a smooth in-line 6 can only be smooth if built well. whereas for vees, they're naturally smooth due to the cylinder arrangements.

You are wrong lah, bro.

IL-6 is more inherently-stable than a V6 engine (which require dual counter-rotating balancer shafts, while an IL-6 doesn't need any at all).

From the stability standpoint order: Flat-8, V8, Flat-6, IL-6, V6, Flat-4, V4, IL-4 (the most stable first). Unfortunately, Flat-8's are a rarity now, which Porsche had in their racing cars a few decades ago.

By inherent stability, engineers define it as a measure of the 2nd-order and 3-order vibrational harmonics.

The only problem with an IL-6 is that it is long, so long that you need a longer engine bay, or a shorter gearbox, or both. While V6 are very much shorter, since 3 cylinders are on each bank - whereas IL-6 is limited by the inter-cylinder wall thickness, which dictates how closely they can be packed.

Volkswagen got around this dilemma with their 15-degree VR6 engine, which still retains most of the IL-6's plus points and the capability of having one (SOHC), or two (DOHC) camshafts controlling all 24 valves of the 6-cylinders. Whereas a V6 will require separate 2 (DOHC), or 4 (Quad-cam) camshafts to operate both banks of 6 cylinders.

For Lexus, they preferred to go the V6 route when the need to push up their engine capacities arosed. That way, they could still couple the engine with larger 6- and 7-speed auto tranmissions. Remember that the IS200 had only a 4-speed tranny, to circumvent the relatively long IL-6 used then. Otherwise, the IS200 will have its gear box and stick behind the driver [laugh]
