Reuters - Thursday, October 30

SINGAPORE, Oct 30 - The full opening of one of Singapore's casinos may be delayed due to construction issues and a shortage of labour, a local newspaper reported on Thursday. (really???as simple a reason as that)

The Marina Bay Sands integrated resort, awarded to Las Vegas Sands in 2006, is several months behind schedule, the pro-government daily Straits Times said, citing sources. The casino was due to open at the end of 2009.

The newspaper said the foundation work for the casino was delayed three to four months and quoted sources as saying it was "impossible" for all its facilities to be fully operational by the end of 2009. sly.gif

Marina Bay Sands officials were not immediately available for comment.

Built on reclaimed land from the sea, the project is one of two multi-billion dollar casinos under construction since Singapore legalised casino gaming in 2005 to attract more tourists.

The second casino, Resorts World at Sentosa, is being built by Genting International and is scheduled for completion in 2010.

Resorts World may also see a delay in the opening of some of its facilities, although a casino spokeswoman said it was "on track" for a "soft opening" in 2010, the paper said. (WTH is that??!!so, not consider delayed??..!)

The two casinos have been hit by higher construction costs since building began, causing Genting International to revise its costs for Resorts World up 15 percent to S$6 billion last year.

nvm..we got less tourist now anyway..

Tourist arrivals to S'pore continue to drop

SINGAPORE: Even with the Formula One race, tourist arrivals to Singapore in September declined year-on-year. This is the fourth straight drop for Singapore's tourism sector.

Visitor arrivals to Singapore reached 739,000 in September, down 4.1 per cent from the same period last year. Visitors from Indonesia, Australia, China, India and Japan accounted for more than half of the figure.

The Singapore Tourism Board (STB) said: "The decline in visitor arrivals in the recent months reflects the challenging global economic environment and outlook for the tourism sector, which may continue into 2009. With the current global economic climate, there is now a general air of uncertainty which has impacted consumer sentiments and discretionary spending. Visitor arrivals and tourism receipts are expected to fall short of the 2008 targets."

Visitor arrivals surged from September 25-30 this year compared to the same period in 2007, due largely to the 2008 Formula One Singapore Grand Prix and pre-Hari Raya traffic.

The growth in visitor arrivals peaked at 30.3 per cent from September 25-27 and from September 28-30, there was an 11.7 per cent increase, compared to the same periods in September 2007.

In contrast, visitor arrivals from September 1-24 this year recorded an average decline of 10 per cent against the same period in September 2007.

STB said visitor arrivals and tourism receipts are expected to fall short of this year's targets and it will continue its efforts to increase visitor spending during the year-end festive period.

STB added that Singapore gazetted hotels were estimated to generate S$186 million in room revenue in the same month, a growth of 26.3 per cent compared to September 2007.

Average room rate during the period was estimated at a record S$306, 49.5 per cent higher than 2007.

Las Vegas Sands say Singapore casino on track

SINGAPORE, Oct 30 - Las Vegas Sands plans to open its Singapore casino by end-2009 as scheduled despite a report that the project will be delayed, a Singapore-based company executive said on Thursday.

"We continue to target the end of 2009 for the opening of Marina Bay Sands," George Tanasijevich, general manager of Marina Bay Sands, said in a statement.

His comments follow a report in the pro-government Straits Times newspaper on Thursday, which said the casino project was several months behind schedule due to construction issues and a shortage of labour.

According to the paper, event organisers said the casino had indicated that it would only accept bookings from April 2010.

Singapore legalised casino gaming in 2005 and licensed two multi-billion-dollar casino-resorts in a bid to attract more tourists and convention visitors.

The Marina Bay Sands is being built on reclaimed land near Singapore's central business district and is scheduled to open in late 2009. The second, Genting International's Resorts World at Sentosa, is slated for completion in 2010.

Resorts World may also see a delay in the opening of some of its facilities although a casino spokeswoman said it was "on track" for a "soft opening" in 2010, the paper said.

The two casinos have been hit by higher construction costs since construction began, causing Genting to revise its costs for Resorts World up 15 percent to S$6 billion last year.
