Increase Tax for CNG?

I heard from a car salesman that the (road?) tax for CNG will be increased sharply. Is it true, or is he just bluffing. If this is the case, there is no hope for CNG to get more popular.

If I not wrong, all along road tax is the same. Maybe he meant the tax on CNG. Apparently now the tax on CNG is not high. But yes, I did hear that gahmen got intention to increase tax on CNG which wud mean consumers have to pay more for CNG.

I did some checking, for CNG, there is a special tax, payable together with Road Tax, currently exempted until end 2009. If the special tax is a few thousand dollars a year like diesel tax, owning a CNG car will be very expensive as you have to pay the Special Tax every year even though you pump petrol all the time. I think for low mileage drivers the savings from CNG will not be sufficient to pay for special tax. The following is cut and paste from LTA

Special Tax

[thumbsdown] In additional to road tax, special tax is payable for non-petrol cars.

This is because there is a petrol duty which is meant to encourage fuel conservation and discourage excessive use of vehicles that contribute to congestion and pollution. However, there is no diesel and CNG duty. Hence, a special tax is levied on any non-petrol car in lieu of fuel duty to narrow the difference in the cost of fuel consumption between petrol and non-petrol cars.

[thumbsdown] CNG cars, CNG taxis, Bi-fuel (CNG/Petrol) cars and Bi-fuel (CNG/Petrol) taxis are exempted from special tax until 31 December 2009. A review will be conducted closer to the date on whether to extend the exemption.

The difference is that the car salesman says it is in the computer system already and he can key in the info and see the big amount to be paid. However of course, Government can always change the program again, it is after all just a piece of software. However I am disappointed with the way things are going.

this is what I call cover-my-backside-take-care-that-I-dont-lose-a-lot-of-money-irresponsible-policy in case CNG become too popular. or another means of silent deterrence

the garment is never serious about going green..simply because there's no incentive for doing so, or rather, more money need to be spent on 'going green'

if they're really serious, they the first thing they can do is to revise our road tax structure to something like UK where the road tax depends on the CO2 emitted by the vehicle..

vehicles which emits the least CO2 pays no tax at all..
