IT Course - MCSE

Dear bros,

 

I am thinking of taking MCSE 2003 course via New Horizons during this recession period. Any people here are in IT line? What is your take comparing MCSE 2003 and 2008? Is New Horizons Mentoring learning good? What is the good price range that I should sign up in New Horizons? Please advise bros. If anyone would like to take together, better still, we can get more discounts!

Yup, something like you are facing two monitors. First monitoring is where you see the video training. The second monitor is like a production house.

i'm recently attending one of those at the location u mentioned. There's pros and cons. The syllabus is very tight and you have to be very disciplined not to keep 'rewinding' or you won't be able to finish.

 

Problem is that if you have a problem, the instructor on duty in the room may not be able to help u if he/she is not familiar with what u're currently taking.

 

Furthermore, compared to traditional instructor led classes, you lose the opportunity to interact with fellow classmates and pick their brains and experience. Hence, this mentored learning thing is purely classroom and academic learning. Not much chance of hearing people share real life encounters and problems and learn from there. As in any textbook learning, every thing will work and everything will be perfect.

I would expect the prices to be cheaper since its online and mass training using the same video but the prices ..... especially in times like this.

Might as well buy those recorded classroom training videos and watch. Should be very much cheaper... like $200-300. Some people buy already burn and sell for a fraction of the original price (like $50 or so) on classified websites. haha, but illegal la.

 

Then find those remote server rental service and practice. Just tell them you want to practice configuring OS for MCSE and they will know what to do. They will tell u how to connect to the server (most likely a virtual server) and once connected u can do anything u like on it...crash it also can.

My take is stay away from MCSE. It's a waste of money because there are literally millions of MCSE out there. Having an MCSE qualification maybe can get you a desktop engineer position, or a wintel engineer position if you are lucky. The pay is not fantastic, but comes with tonnes of sh&t. Further MCSE is not that easy to earn, as you have to invest lots of good money, and pass to 5 - 6 exams before earning the qualifications. So the time, effort and money put into it vs the returns is really terrible.

 

If at all possible, you might like to stay away from IT industry. I've been in IT industry for over 10 years, take my word for it. Other industry like service / tourism / F&B would be much better choice.

im in IT for 14 years and seriously speaking, unless u move into mgmt area within 5-8 years, there is nothing worthwhile in IT cos technology moves so fast, ur outdated the moment u get ur technical cert. even in mgmt, it is still a lousy job. no longer the goldmine like the 90s. is now juz a normal average pay job with above average working hours

Woo!!! all of you guys are soooo right, being in "IT" for so long, really wonder what's the point of chasing and chasing those certs. Cannot be chasing until I retire right??

And in SG, without moving into a mgnt position, one cannot climb, worse is when given that role, it will be usually a undesirable role. Besides, I myself am not sure if I can even survive this downturn. [sweatdrop]

How long can those who are in this industry lasts before being replace by cheaper alternate FT who may have all the really updated certs and are highly qualified. Alot IT jobs now are contract bases or temp position. As communication cost are getting lower, large companies are looking into moving their IT data ctr to cheaper countries, or regionalise.

Infact, for those who wants to jump ship also dunno where and what to jump to. (equals to jobless state)

As Arowana1 and Drive_carcar mentioned, it does not look like a industry that one would work until retire. Be teacher, lawyer, doctor, politician, also better in IT.

Not to discourage the TS, just something to ponder and to figure out if its ROI is worth it.(unless got sponsor or gov subsidizes then different liao.)

IT is no longer like before, now is work work work but get paid onli once a month.

MCSE is rubbish. go for CCNA instead ROI is higher as dump is not as easily available, and there is simulations in the exam unlike MCSE the simulations is junk.

I used to work in F&B for few years before i jump to IT. The pay back then was very low...

There are tonnes and tonnes of stuff you can do bro.

 

You can go into aeronautic engineering, pest control, Fire & Workplace safety, accountancy, commercial photography.... etc etc. I name all these because I have friends and relatives in these line, and they are doing okay.

 

Or else, do your own business also not bad. Set up a food stall or something, stuff like that.

 

No matter how bad times are, there's always a way out.
