Beachboys Clutched April 29, 2009 Author Share April 29, 2009 well, i guess of point of contention is really about clamping down on the supply chain~ Yes, there will be shops who will continue flouting this law (if there ever will be one) and customers will still seek such services, but with every strong crackdown on the workshops who are gambling with their money and livelihood, workshops will always think twice... Just like the recent Customs crackdown on PIs, every PI now will think twice about under-declaring OMV... or any food outlets / entertainment outlets which allow smokers to smoke outside the yellow box will be penalised... ↡ Advertisement
Kelpie 2nd Gear April 29, 2009 Share April 29, 2009 (edited) Over the weekend, quite a number of news article on illegal car modding, racing, etc... Today ST forums has a posting whereby the writer proposes to penalise the workshop that does the illegal modifications. IMHO, it is a good idea since in theory, certain modifications of car is illegal and certainly anyone who offers or faciliates such services is abetting the crime... It is just the same as penalising the shops which sell cigarettes to underage kids... Like what I've said in the other similar tread in Lite and EZ, I am somehow for the idea to regulate the car modifications for workshops in our country. Not that it is something new. For those who are debating that car modifications should not be regulated but mind you, car modifications have always been regulated. It is just a matter how harsh and tough the relevant authorities wanted to enforce it. At the end of the day, you can mod whatever illegal you want, the moment the car moved out from the workshop, you are breaking the laws, as simple as that. Also imagine if there is no regulation, people (especially the younger ones) can just buy any cheap cars, lup-in big cc engine, loud exhaust and TC it. Then how to get people to buy stock cars with better performance specifications? Like many, I used to lupe in whatever that can boost my car horsepower, spending countless unproductive hours at workshops and I learnt through the processes and realized one thing, "Want more bhp/torque? just buy a better car.". Stock car is still the best compromise. Now my car is completely stock except the rims . There is no excuse not to regulate workshops even if there is a public race track to be opened in 2010. If not any tom, dick and harry can do all sort of modifcations at the backyard shops liao. Can't imagine our roads becoming noiser with cars fitted with extremely huge and loud exhaust everywhere. At07 Neutral Newbie April 29, 2009 Share April 29, 2009 There are people who modify their cars for the wrong reason but there are one who do it purely to maximise the potential of their ride. Responsibility to yourself and the public at large is the deciding factor regarding right or wrong! Accident kills so are we going to ban all the cars on the road? "Maximize the potential" for what objective? If it is not for tracking or legal racing activites, what is the point? Many snake oil mods are waste of time and money, yielding butt feel sensation with no real increase in bhp/torque. Serious modding would almost resulting in us breaking the laws. IMHO, just save the money and get a better car. Regards,

A Toyota Wish will always be a MPV no matter how heavily modded it is. I have a bro, who spent $20k modding his Vios, when he could had gotten a higher end car at the first place. That said, there are things that people just enjoy doing. Like my Civic, even though it's not a bad car, I thought it would be nice to make it acclerate even faster just to overtake huge heavy vehicles and road hoggers. Boyboy 1st Gear April 30, 2009 Share April 30, 2009 it's more profitable for the gahmen to not bother the WS. i mean, LTA in sin ming, just next to some mod shops. likewise, TP at ubi, also alot of mod shop by not disturbing the WS too much, or clamping down too hard on minor (but illegal) mods, LTA can fine car owners, and gahmen can collect tax from the ws's profits. win-win situation mah. it's always been abt money. LTA top priority is to catch those who flout red-plate rules, not modders. the fine is much steeper for the former category anyway, i personally like things the way they are, wrt lta's handsoff approach to car workshops . i just wish they were more lenient on exhaust mods, and allowed sports catalytic convertors. i mean, with or without sports cat, i still get $500 fine, i rather decat then to pay the extra for a sports cat.
