Beachboys Clutched April 27, 2009 Share April 27, 2009 Over the weekend, quite a number of news article on illegal car modding, racing, etc... Today ST forums has a posting whereby the writer proposes to penalise the workshop that does the illegal modifications. IMHO, it is a good idea since in theory, certain modifications of car is illegal and certainly anyone who offers or faciliates such services is abetting the crime... It is just the same as penalising the shops which sell cigarettes to underage kids... ↡ Advertisement
Thumbs Neutral Newbie April 27, 2009 Share April 27, 2009 In the end, you still see underaged kids smoking. Here's another example. So many people know downloading of movies, music etc without copyright owner's permission is illegal. Yet many people still do it. It's not that the law is inadequate, or that it is not enforced. But counting on the law alone to deter or prevent undesirable behaviour is ineffective.
Beachboys Clutched April 27, 2009 Author Share April 27, 2009 (edited) agree, there will always be parties who still persist regardless wether its illegal... Its just that currently, the law does not penalise the workshops for modifying cars, only the car owners... But if the law allows penalties, workshops will think twice before accepting such modification jobs since its not worth to risk the workshop's livelihood just to modify a car exhaust or install a turbo~ Once the law is there, only can enforcement be done and that's where the relevant govt agencies have the authority to enforce the law~ Of course, the issue of how to enforce the law is another big area by itself Edited April 27, 2009 by Beachboys
Galantspeedz Turbocharged April 27, 2009 Share April 27, 2009 Actually car modifications is not illegal if it is used for track thus the onus should be on drivers to make sure that if their cars is not road legal then it should not be on the road but on the tracks. Silver_blade Turbocharged April 27, 2009 Share April 27, 2009 Agree with you. In any case, it;s the drivers that need to change their mindset. If they are racer..they will race in any kind of car...modded or not.
Altivo 3rd Gear April 27, 2009 Share April 27, 2009 IMHO, they should just focus on revamping the car insurance industry so that the premiums are not unjustly inflated. Particulary for those who didnt even "touch" their insurance
Leepee 1st Gear April 27, 2009 Share April 27, 2009 Please don't kill such workshops! I need them 2 years from now to modify my Caymen!! The racing tracks in coming to Changi in 2 years time. Singapore will need these workshop to modify many race cars. Their business will definately boom. So they need to establish their expertise within these two years. If there is no such workshops around....then whats the point of having the race track. Everyone racing stock Nissan Latio vs Suzuki SSS isit?

Agree, and this is why LTA cannot enforce it on the workshops, can only enforce on the drivers. You can mod the car whatever way you like for the track, as long as you don't drive it on public roads, it's legal. LTA only can enforce on public roads vehicles, not track vehicles. Shitcar Neutral Newbie April 27, 2009 Share April 27, 2009 haha... no car workshop do illegal mods.... wat a joke if that happen... car shops are there so that we can do moddings to increase hp, image, etc.. but end of the day if no such shop anymore, i think all of us will just buy Cherry QQ... hahaha
Stickman Neutral Newbie April 27, 2009 Share April 27, 2009 i think its not so much a matter of what mods are done to the car, but how the driver drives once the car is modded. bring zhng car / race mentality to public roads = endangering. i think that is a huge part of what the authority is trying to prevent. i think a shift in policy is possible, allowing mods etc, BUT only tear it up at the tracks. sure drive ur 650bhp car on public road, but keep to traffic rules. if u flout traffic rules in a heavily modded car, be prepared to pay more fine/jail
