Hi,

 

I just bought Penzoil manual gear oil which is 80W90 GL-5, i just saw my manual and it states that for my car recommanded is 75W85 or 75W90 GL-3/GL4.

 

Can i still use my GL-5 on a GL-4 recommanded car ? My car is just a normal car without any LSD... [shakehead]

Nope, usage of normal GL-5 gear oil on a GL-4 spec transmission will cut the transmission life by 1/2 due to the high EP additives(sulfur content). Just go back to the shop and exchange for the correct GL-4 spec oil.

any suitable 75w/85 GL-4 MTF to recommend? user manual says need 2.15 ltr..

 

GL-4 Amsoil MTG 75w90 or RL mixture of 50/50 MTL/MT90 would be a good choice.

i called them up again but they're only left with GL-5 and the workshop said no difference..

 

anybody wants to buy my penzoil gearbox oil ? 3 quarts bought today only... selling $10 per quart plus deliver to your house.. pm me.

Hi, I got a car currently at 10,xxx km... During 10k servicing, the service advisor keep psycho me to change gear oil, even though it is not stated in the car manual that must change at 10k . Eventually i did not change, as i thought i can change outside.

 

Anybody can advise me if its advisable to change the gear oil? Thx...

user manual says capacity is 2.15 ltr, so must get 3 qts? the extra seems a bit wasteful, or can just replace 2 qts?

 

or anyone wanna share half a qt of Amsoil MTG with me? can arrange to change MTF together..

It's a good idea to do a one time change, get raid of the run-in metal and fill it up with top quality synthetic. This change would last you at least 60k for severe service or 100k for normal service.

Yes, IMO abit wasteful too but it's good fill up full as the gear oil also acts as a coolant for the transmission.

When I changed by manual transmission oil at 10k km, the looks of the oil was greyish. I guess its assembly grease/oil or factory oil which don't have dye in it... I believe transmission will have some wear metal which should be flush out after run-in. I plan to change again at 50k km. [drivingcar]

thanks for info & advice.. actually my user manual says MTF is only inspect every 10k.. did not specify any intervals for replacement.. so my mileage 62k liao MTF still not changed.. but thinking now can change since COE now so high looks like gotta keep my car for another few years.. [cool]

Better to use the correct specification oil. Not only might GL5 oil attack yellow metal in the gear box, it also do not have the correct fiction modifier which GL4 spec have to enable smooth shifting. I said "might" because I read new GL5 oil have inhibitor to protect against yellow metal attack, but better be on the safer side.

Bros, I changed my MTF at 60K and only realised the manual states 100K interval. Now its 110K (50K after since last change), should I go for a change?

 

Using RL from MX too...
