"Virtual" parking coupon

OPC owners can now purchase their permit via the web.

 

I was thinking along the lines of paying for parking in URA/HDB carparks via SMS.

 

Goes something like this:

1. Enter the HDB carpark (non season)

2. Instead of tearing coupons, you sms to xxxxx "Car license plate_Carpark #_0830_1030".

3. The bill comes to you through your monthly telephone bill.

 

That's it. No more paper wastage and littering. Warden can still come and check if your "coupon" has expired with a device which speaks to the main server.

 

Add to that the advantage of being able to top up the "coupon" while you are on the 30th floor in your friend's place and the gathering dragged on longer than expected. No need to spend 15 min going up and down to top up. Just do it in your friend's place via a SMS.

 

LTA has no need to install costly EPS system as well.

 

The technology is already there. Just need to modify. You guys think will work?

 

LTA folks, if you are reading, feedback to your higher mgt. You can claim that this is your original idea and get credit for it. I don't care also as long as we benefit.

It's good but this technology is going to be costly and confirm they will increase parking rates if this technology is used .

Program needs to be written and managed by LTA. Can capitalise and amortise over 10 years.

Will probably need a few racks to host. There will be recurring maintenance costs as well.

But, they will save on printing cost, coupon distribution cost and cost of installing EPS (which I think is not cheap).

 

Think overall business case will still be neutral or even positive. Depends who is conceptualising the business case. If that person is smart, can lump all in.

May not be...this technology is not new,,,if I remember correctly those car sharing/rentals uses this currently...so would only need a variation

this one i heard months back already..... the only problem is technology integration part.

see how LTA and URA work it out.

Did not hear from anywhere. Just something I thought of while preparing for bed last night and thinking of new ideas for my regular work.

 

Maybe my idea is a little late and therefore not as original. <_<

May be need to send SMS to LTA before you are on road.. Get acknowledgement msg from lta..

drive.. TP no need to stop your car.. check online if the car number is registered in the system for that day.. Pay the amnt along with your mobile bill...Simple implementation..

I soliciting opinions whether this would be good for drivers and if most think it will benefit us, I will draft a mail to LTA. My ang mo no good so need time to draft. Should have studied harder last time.

you brought up a valid point. Those who do not carry HPs will not be able to use the system. I know some folks don't carry HPs even though Singapore's mobile penetration is > 100%.

 

Therefore there will be a need for a dual system: The main one being the "virtual" system and the traditional as a back up (for folks w/o HP or whose HP has been misplaced, no batt etc). Drivers should still be able to make use of the paper system. But to push more people to use the "virtual" system, let's give an incentive. Eg a 5% discount on monthly HDB/URA parking fees if monthly parking exceed $20.

 

Maybe add on additional service in a year's time: Use IVR and therefore you can buy "virtual" coupons via a fixed line phone as well. Something like calling the NS help desk to inform them of overseas trip.

 

However, the 3 telcos will stand to "lose" especially if their subscribers default on payment. Maybe the solution is to get these subscribers to put a $50 deposit which they can draw on for parking purposes only. Or have a back-to-back arrangement with LTA about such default fees.

 

Have I covered everything already?
