Ngck 3rd Gear June 27, 2010 Share June 27, 2010 I'm a long time Apple user, not becos I like Apple, but becos my the software I use for my work is only available on the Apple platform. Prior to Apple, in the early 90's, I was a hardcore Window's guy. Let me just say that every single Apple computer I have bought (over 15) since the 90's is still working today. The oldest ones may be a bit slow, but they definitely are capable of most tasks like web surfing and word processing. I dropped 3 of my Powerbooks (still not called Macbook Pros yet) and despite the chassis being bent and screens cracked, they still work. Not one single virus attack and zero anti virus software and all my Apple computers. Repair? Never needed to. My family's other Windows computers? All I can say is vomit blood. If the Windows user experience is anywhere close to Apple, I would at least buy one. But until today, I still can't find any compelling reason to. last time not many ppl buy.... so not economical for hackers to create virus for Macs same as built quality... last time volume is small.. so control is easy... now they are become the giant that they always wanted to be... we shall see..... ipod already alot of issues liao... ↡ Advertisement

You actually made your life fit the Apple. I've owned macs from G3's to G5's and that's when I decided to change to a different platform to keep up with the tech for MY work. ;) Also.. your Macs never died before? Wow.. lucky. Maybe I'm the only unfortunate Singaporean to have a Powerbook Titanium BLOW UP overnight? Oh no its the fault of the Sony battery, Apple only makes the best! If the Apple experience is as open as a Window, I don't mind going back. Too bad. Only intel. Only OSX. Only Cinema Display. Only build in monitor. Only built in battery. Only one color. Ya lor. I can either run windows or a a hackintosh today, just that I'm not bothered to and my job doesn't require me to run OSX-specific applications (phew!). I still can work with OSx (have to do it every now and then, esp with clients who blindly believe that videos HAVE to be edited on a mac--wtf?) The other 2 windows PCs in my house have not been upgraded for the past 4 years, running some "ancient" Athlon64 with only 2GB of ram. One is hooked up to the PC in the living room for internet TV (feel free to hate me, those who bought the WC package), the other is dad's home office PC. Golden rule in IT: If you don't mess with it, nothing will go wrong. I think the geekiest thing I've gone in the past 2 years was to open it up and suck out all the dust. On a PC, its a 2-screw affair. Can't say the same for my previous G5 Mac. Edited June 27, 2010 by Krado

Can't say the same for my previous G5 Mac. the thing is if the users are kids and old folks, i can comfortably let them fool around with the mac without getting the Oops & sh!t ...... i donated my 8yo emac to my inlaw for kids and MIL to play games, surf net, watch youtube, photos, etc. and i don't have to go service or maintain it
Chickenbackside 1st Gear June 27, 2010 Share June 27, 2010 Gimme Logic Pro on Windows and I'll switch immediately. Until that happens, my livelihood is directly affected by it not being available on the Windows platform. My properties, cars, food, holidays... are paid for by this software that only runs on Apple computers. I'd say they're pretty smart. Buy out the best music software company, make it work only on their platform, and watch the money roll in. Too bad there's no competition on the Windows platform. The only other worthy competition runs on Mac too. So yup, for now, Apple loves me and I love Apple. Once there's a better and more reliable music production software, goodbye Apple. I'm still waiting for the day.

Lest this degenerates into a Mac vs PC debacle, let us remind ourselves that electronics in terms of QC have taken a nose dive. I believe many electronics and digital gadgets were much better, build quality wise. For instance, i bought a PC by a local brand now defunct Compro in 1999 sporting a then top of the range 550 Mhz Pentium III processor. All my friends woo and ahhh at the specs then haha. 64 MB of RAM and 8MB of VRAM was alot in those days. And it is still going strong today. Heck i am even toying with the idea of installing Linux just to muck around with it.

I'm still waiting for the day. Thankfully the software I have to use on a Mac is also available on the Windows platform. Photoshop, Aftereffects, Premier, Maya Lightwave, except Final Cut Pro which some clients *DEMAND* for (pfft) Yup and thus the generalization that anyone in the media industry (or related) owns a Mac. That's 100% annoying when most of the people who have that generalization don't work in that industry AT ALL. PLUS, thanks to Transformers and Michael Gay, some of them are beginning to believe that the military use Macs too! So yeah, I still love my Windows-based AMD Phenom desktop that basically can be assembled by me. Of course, problems will surface but it beats having to pay Apple extra money for overpriced graphics card that belong in the previous era AT today's modern graphics card prices. So yup I love cheapo and cheapo love me. The day I can build my own Apple from millions of possible configurations, goodbye Windows. I'm still waiting for the day, too! Yaloryalor 5th Gear June 28, 2010 Share June 28, 2010 U have to worry if u r buying camera or game console over at sim lim.... computer parts? u can be very sure that u r getting the best deals. Most shops have printed price list, btw r u singaporean or not? There are many shops (with different names) are actually owned by the same boss. However, the price still make a diff. I would say really need to do some homework before commit to any sales person. Ask around, you would get a better deal.
Ethene 1st Gear June 28, 2010 Share June 28, 2010 u buy those 'branded' PC eg Dell, HP... and when u actually tear them apart, inside are are s--t parts. BEST is DIY SLS.
Pchmj Clutched June 28, 2010 Share June 28, 2010 If don't know anything about com parts, buy branded com, HP/Dell etc. Most shops in SLS gives lousy parts, especially power supply, casing. They just get the cheapest available parts and assemble. Parts used in branded com are of high quality actually, if they use sub quality parts, cost of after sales support will shoot up. Buy in SLS only when you know what you are buying, go to reputable shops if unsure. Only a few good shops around, Bell, Fuwell, PC Themes, they won't smoke you. The others give it a pass if you are unsure of what to buy.
Kxbc Turbocharged June 28, 2010 Share June 28, 2010 I will go for SLS and AMD processor to reduce cost of ownership. Did it twice and both times worked for more than 4 years w/o breakdown. Only gave up the first one because it became too slow and upgrade parts became too expensive. My 2nd and current one still working fine coming to 5 years. Only bad thing was that the power supply conked out early this year. A new power supply costs me $46.
