If you're not there to fark around, why not? Everywhere is also good for family.

Take MRT, and buy the one day pass, saves you money, that is if you can plan your trip proper and

visit a few places within the period.

I am thinking of going Taipei for a conference.. Good to bring family along?

Neutral Newbie

For Taiwan, its different. If you want to visit the mountains, gorges, tunnels, sea sides, old railway, etc.... w/o guided tour, it is impossible.

Actually, F&E is also very easy along the east coast. Traffic is light so its easy to drive around on your own to Taroko Gorge etc.

Just take a train to Hualian, arrange for car rental and you are ready to go. After that, return the car and take the train back to Taipei. Infact, the whole stretch from Hualian to Kenting in the south is very driveable for tourist. As with all F&E, research is the key !!

Another benefit of renting a car is you get to stay in those nice and cosy homestays nearer to the countryside instead of the older city hotels, which cost more !
