Need recommendations for Hotels in London and Paris

I am bringing my family (2 adults & 2 kids) to London and Paris and need recommendations for hotels that are about $200 or less a night. As this is a free & easy trip, also looking for hotels near to the subway so that we don't have to lug the luggages for too long.

Would appreciate any assistance given and if possible any tips to get around these two places, cheers!

many hotels in central london / paris are within short walk from underground/Metro stations. But $200 a night might be hard to get especially after taking into the consideration the exchange rates.

Btw, I stayed at Hotel: Helios Opera Hotel Paris (Hotel Address: 75 Rue De La Victoire Paris FR-75009) during my stay in Paris. Its less than 5 mins walk to Galleries Lafayette and the Metro. Cost me about $250 a night. Got a nice room (with personal balcony) and there was enought space in front of my double bed for another single bed.

these are what i used;

For London (and all over UK), its Travelodge for me

http://www2.travelodge.co.uk

if u can book way in advance, u can get some special promo - 8GBP or 11GBP rooms

I would recommend the newer Travelodges' as they're cleaner and nicer. But the other older ones are still OK.

Another one to try

http://www.premierinn.com/en/

have not tried this myself as i'm quite used to Travelodge

For Paris, I used ibis

http://www.ibishotel.com/gb/home/index.shtml

note - most (in fact, all) of these in the cities have very small rooms... so might be a squeeze for your family. u can check if they have family-sized rooms.

For Travelodge, they are most hostels? How's the security like? Thanks!

I am starting to figure that out! [laugh] Will most likely up my budget to cater for the location, most important to me is close proximity to the train stations, at least we can then easily move around....

Was also looking at Travelodge prices and they are quite cheap! Wonder if they are near any stations, do you have any idea?

Agree with corgan. I stayed at helios opera also. 5 mins walk to Lafayette n mrt or if u want a met with Alot of different lines like our cityhall, it is 15mins walk away. The airport bus alight n board around there too. So it's good for free n easy tourists like me.

The other side of hotel is a church and if you walk from the right of church, it leads u to the famous moulin rouge about 15-20 mins walkaway. Can get hotel to book for u tix at no extra charge. Left of church along main road got supermarket

If u shop at Lafayette ask for cash refund that u can process at the airport. My fren encounter problem with credit card refund at Lafayette due to missing document. The refund counter at airport is behind SQ flight counter.

Oh ya Helios room is abit small but security wise is ok. After 12mn I think, u must ring bell for them to open the main door. I left my shopping with their recept overnight with no problems

they're slightly more upscale than hostels.... that's why its called "budget hotel"

security wise - its just a front desk manned by 1 or 2 staffs at nite

but if u mean if its safe to leave your barang in the room while you guys go out to tour the city - its safe

i even leave my laptop behind...

of course u take along your valuables, cash & passport

i also tend to stay away from the south-eastern part of london

for proximity to train stations, see here...

http://www2.travelodge.co.uk/explore_the_u...51.5117,-0.0914

but seriously... its no big deal getting a cab for your family of 4 + luggages

by law, ALL cabs in city of london must be wheelchair friendly.... which means they're all spacious ones....

also... as mentioned.... google map "street view" is your best friend

btw, some tips for paris;

learn a few simple french... phrases for "hello", "thank you", "where is", "please"...

parisans can be quite stuck-up if u try to talk to them in english...

when asking for directions.... my trick is to sputter along in simple french, to make them think i'm learning... then they get fed-up or took pity on my sucky french and then talk to me in english :p

instead of trains - try the buses... u get to see more of the beauty of paris that way

(if u can navigate s'pore bus routes... paris one is piece of cake... and they're actually quite punctual)

also, i think they should have the city light rail up by now...

enjoy your holidays

oh yeah... YMCA is really worth it

very cheap... and they provide breakfast... the really hearty english breaklfast

for an additional small sum, u can get dinner from them too

you should take the tube orthebus. quite efficient both but avoid peak hrs and isolated areas

cabs not worth it.

Guys, we also need internet access. Any of you know whether we can purchase pre-paid internet access sim cards like what we have locally? That is, for a few days usage etc?

We definitely plan to take public transport whenever possible. I was just worried about lugging our luggages en route to the hotel....

oh, even if the signs says there is wheelchair access (maybe luggage friendly) the access itself might be spoilt.. lol

if you are still keen to use low-budget accommodation, why not search online for short term apartments?

I tried (4 of us in the family) an apartment in Paris few years back, 5mins walk from MRT, walking distance from many attractions, self-contained with cockery etc, seperate living/dining and bedroom, though not a brand new building, it has character. The spacious interior is a plus compared with normal hotel room unless you get a suite.

The operator even DHL the apartment keys in advance to me before we flew off to Paris. Hope this helps.
