Was told many years back, 'ladder' and 'leader' same spelling in German. So you need a 'leader' to go up the roof?

How do you translate 'boring machine' into Mandarin?

Bo liao ji qi. [laugh] just joking...

I think the appropriate word is "appreciate".

One cannot truelyfathom the depth of Chinese culture and thinking until one learn to speak and read in the language, regardless of which ever Dialect one is fluent in.

I think many folks here are pretty fluent not just Mandarin, but also appreciate the history and rich tradition which can only be accessed and unlocked by using the Language.

There is no other way!

You will be very surprised many non-Chinese not only can speak, but also read basic daily Chinese characters.

Once you get the hang of that, your thinking and even the approach to character and outlook will also be influenced.

Simple observation is between an English-educated Chinese vs a Chinese-medium graduate.

It is up to each of us who we want to be and how we mold our next generation.

PS: Wanna guess who's daughter is in the video? [:p]

people flock to china to do business, so why must they accommodate to others?

they can simply give the business opportunities to others who are more cooperative

you, including many others, should stop living in a self-centered world

have you wondered why english is universal now?

simply because of british empire, where its sun never set (well, it does set in the end), which extended its influence to all parts of the world

then USA came along..

if u think china will not influence the world in the next few decades, then u r being short-sighted

we survive by adapting to others, not others to adapt to us

anyway, learning mandarin still boils down to the fact that we are of chinese descendants (referring to local chinese)...

economic benefits are secondary reason

english is still very important... never deny that

that's why i think malaysia is going backward by revising their secondary maths/science classes back to malay language next year

i think we singaporeans is fortunate to be exposed to both english and mandarin since young...

it's a pity some choose to concentrate on one language only

Neutral Newbie

I shudder at the day that the Chinese and Indians rule the world economically. Already the richer Chinese are very snobbish wherever they go and they bring their mannerisms with them everywhere in the world. Good example is HK. Just aks any native Hong konger if they welcome their 'tong bao' from the mainland. I doubt you will find many. As for the Indians, when I was a teacher at an international school in Shanghai, I hated dealing with Indian parents because of their behaviour, expecting the whole world to yield to their demands just because they can afford to send their children to an international school. There were also rich Koreans, Japanese, American, Taiwanese and other parents from other countries, but none as aloof and demanding as Indian parents.

That's the problem when learning institutions becomes a money rolling enterprise.

Which is why I appreciate the way I was brought up in schoold, with the ruler, cane and iron discipline.

Parents? If you don't like it here, find another school.

Or unless you donate substantially to the school coffers, teachers will be warned to leave your kid more or less alone. Is that what parents really want?

LOL! You still have that phobia after the Shanghai experience. [;)]

Good news is people will change and learn, it is just a matter of time.

Fact is in today's world, being multi-lingual is better than being proficient in just one.
