Hi,

I'm new here, and totally new to car audio stuff. Driving a cheap Nisson Latio. It had a JVC CD changer and head unit already. I don't fancy another head unit, no CD/DVD playepr or whatsoever, just want up the sound quality a bit.

I guess I just need to add an amplifier, a sub, plus upgrade the speakers? I don't wanna spend more than 1k, so probably have to go for second hand ones, which I don't mind at all. Any brand/model to suggest so I can look for them?

Oh btw, any good installer to recommend? Hope not too exp type ;)

Got sound system at home already, and I don't drive too often. So I don't wanna spend too much on car audio. But if 1k can get me better sound quality, I don't mind.

Your info and help will be very appreciated it.

Cheers!

Frank

Less than 1k.

I would suggest you change the head unit + a good pair of speakers, forget about amplifier.

Alternative is to invest in a really good part of well rounded speakers that will help compliment your JVC. Personally, I find Helix speakers good in this area.

Thanks for your suggestion. Actually I quite like my simple JVC head unit. Wonder if this following deal is good:

Most Amp at that price point is just junk, just increase volume but the frequency response range is poor.

Stick with your JVC, try a better set of speakers with tweeters. Think it will help you a lot.

I had heard and installed this set, it is pretty good rounder. Helix B52C.

But personally, I am using DLS speakers with Helix Amp, it is able to capture the high-end audio well with good control.

Also have subwoofer with mono block amp. (Still feel it is entry level for audio enthusiast)

Thanks. So you mean I don't need to add an amp but up the speakers only? That sounds great! Hope you dont mind me asking, what Helix Amp are you using?

dekitting is a small issue. if the car kena accident, the ICE may be gone too. imagine having to rebuild a 10k ICE system after a heavy accident. its going to be heart wrenching and heavy on the wallet.

I don't see any problem using 2ch bridged to poewr a 4 ohm sub. What issue do you see here? Care to explain?

The Helix B52C speakers seem good enough to me. Wonder where in SG I can buy those? I can get from eBay for very good price, but the shipping might be costly due to its weight ...

Thanks again.

btw while im at it, any pros here has recommendations for subwoofers ? dun mind getting 2nd hand (nt too old) :D

currently using RF P1S4 10" and just got to know its kinda chui as it uses paper cones.

looking for woofers which can go stronger, deeper and richer beats. to be powered by Arc Audio KAR400.2 amp..

thanks :)

Sorry bro, didn't follow up on this thread. There should be a few things that you need to check first.

1. Can what you want be achieved by tuning. Was the sub TA'ed properly. TA (time alignment) can shift where the sub notes land, ie, at the windscreen, at the dash, on your chest, at your seat, etc. Same with the midbass punch as well. Midbass punch and sub bass has to blend and handshake properly, else you will not get good, strong bass.

2. Are you not feeling the punch because of the sub or the midbass? What frequencies are the midbass and subs crossed at? Some cars I listen to have sub bass but no midbass punch.

3. Are your amp gains done correctly?

The list goes on....too many things to check before you go and change your sub.

Helix B FOUR.

Why I don't recommend Amp for your case. See the scenarios below:

1. Average HU (jvc in your case) + lousy AMP + lousy speakers = still lousy

2. Average HU + good AMP + good speakers = lousy (hear all the nips and crack of the average HU)

3. Average HU + good (rounded) speakers = better than average sound

4. Good HU + good speakers = average sound (no amp, and likely to burst 1k budget)

If possible, go for B62C. The 6.5" midbass will make quite a difference in the bass compared to 5".

Thanks, sounds very logic now :) I guess good rounded speakers are the way to go for me. Now just need to find out where to buy this thing other than from eBay:

Dunno is correct, I never thought about that (am newbie too).

I said B52C because it was the one I installed and heard.

I'd prefer buying from local shop if possible. Just need to know where to buy these...

thanks again guys, you probably saved me more than 500 bucks :)

How is the estimated weight of this thing? I don't mind shipping it over from UK if it's less than 3KG to 4KG...

Got mine from autoimage, u can try foon audio too.

Local is better as u still need to install with cabling and warranty.

Problem is u must be exactly clear with what u want as shops will introduce their ideas (natually, sound experts and good salesmanship). May end up with rojak or 1/2 upgrade later kind of system.

Thanks for the suggestion. My Latio has pretty good sound proof, good enough to my standard anyway :)

I'll check with those shops and see how much they'd charge the B62C speakers. Hopefully not more than $350 installed.

Thanks again and cheers!
