Vulcann 6th Gear December 15, 2011 Share December 15, 2011 Yeah, indeed this was probably the case with US running US$14 trillion in national debt. The call to cut down on military spending grows stronger. As for the carriers previous complement of aircraft, I'm of the opinion that the F/A-18 is not in the same league as the F-14 that it replaced. The hornet's speed of Mach 1.8 pales in comparison against the Tomcat's 2.3. During the Libyan crisis in the 80s, the Tomcats were sent to intercept the MIGs and shot them out of the sky 13 miles away. Man, that was cool. The super Hornet is a good compromise to replace both Tomcats and very early Intruders, the former figher/interceptor role and the latter the attack role. Speed used to THE consideration but not the most important one anymore. Avionics, fire-control powerplant and weapon systems are the more crucial things to take note of. Having said that, I agree that a Hornet may not match a Tomcat one-on-one but it more than makes up for that with other capabilities. And with the introduction of Lightning II, F35s, the Hornets may slowly lose its relevance and at most primarily serve in the attack role later on. As to BVR shootings, most of the time the defenders are very reluctant to do that because of fear of blue-on-blue incidents. So AIM120 may be like the Phoenix slowly fade off eventually... Wishcumstrue 6th Gear March 9, 2012 Share March 9, 2012 (edited) Top Gun is about USN. And they don't welcome USAF folks. So super hornet is the likely candidate. I was wrong or is it 1 Apr still weeks away? Cruise is playing the role of a Lockheed F-35 test pilot - Tom Burbage, the Lockheed Martin F-35 programme manager, Somehow, I suspect USN & Lockheed are part funding & promoting this Hollywood project just to get this overpriced, over budget, overdue JSF program going. This maybe the first military-movie that actually feels unrealistically dated compared to today's futuristic-real world of UAVs and remote operations.
