It's being looked down 'cos low pay. If cleaners and rubbish collectors are paid $5K on par with engineers and junior managers, do you think they will be looked down? In UK, the train drivers are paid more than teachers and teaching is looked down by the society.

 

If cleaners and trash collectors are paid 5k, can you imagine the upheaval that will happen? Everyone wants a prestigious job,

even normal clerks have some kind of atas title now, one needs to realize one's own capability, to sweep fllors and remove trash is not a shameful job, it's people who have the one kind mindset that look down on such people. Sadly, we have a lot of these around.

A mindset like that is hard to wash off. It's inherent in the concept of 'face' in the Chinese culture, as we know it. The government has done nothing to instil humility in the people's hearts, but promote over-competitiveness in society instead. And the reason for doing so is obvious.

I'd say it's not the government's fault. Look again, one cannot go blaming a system when the system doesn't work in their favor.

the mindset thing is from the family itself, the nucleolus, where it all starts. I have never heard once the government saying that such jobs are demeaning, low, dirty etc.

 

Even in the insect kingdom, there are flies who lap up waste products, some eat at rotten flesh, all these are needed in a society.

Nothing is wasted and no job is useless.

 

If I may add, if "face value" was so important to the Chinese, (not only, other races as well) our forefathers came as laborers,

slaves, lifting heavy loads, cleaning out muck (36 door, old toilet bucket system) then are we to look down on our great grand fathers/mothers/uncles/aunties?
