The Land Transport Authority (LTA) is reviewing the enforcement regime against workshops which illegally modify vehicles.

2,645 summonses were issued for illegal modification offences for all vehicle types in 2010.

The figure went up to 7,322 in 2011.

For motorcycles, 341 summonses were issued for illegal modifications in 2010, and 1,175 summonses in 2011.

In 2012, the figure shot up to 7,239 summonses for illegal vehicle modifications in the first eight months alone.

1,405 summonses were for illegal motorcycle modifications.

In a written reply to Parliament, Transport Minister Lui Tuck Yew said no one has been jailed for illegal modification offences.

Enforcement actions are currently focused on owners of illegally modified vehicles.

No summonses have been issued against motor vehicle workshop owners so far.

Whether or not you sappork the current laws is one thing,

but if you are serious about enforcing them, then the workshops should have been chased long long ago...

agreed with ur opinion..they are "enforcing" it to gain the "monetary fines" without addressing the root of the issue..but then again these people who desires to modify their vehicles can always go north

If really chasing money...

I would think can fine workshops far more than individual.

Anyway, just seize the shop records - so who install illegal and fine all one shot - like that very very efficient

more people got killed by reckless PRC and clueless Bangalas instead of illegal modified cars.

That's actually a poor argument, you are in effect saying that because the Bangalas etc are worse, this law shouldn't be enforced.

May as well say,

because some people speed at 140, I shouldn't get a ticket for 120

The law should be argued on its own merits.

Just to play devil's advocate,

Why should we allow illegal activities here, just because can go JB and do?

So next time we all follow JB law?

Anyway, that would also make it easy to catch, just sit at causeway and catch people on the way home.

Depends what type of mod, if it don't affect me I don't care.

But for those illegal HID that was not properly aligned and shining to high, I support LTA enforcment action.

Not that I disagree with you on this front here.

Just find it ironic coming from you, someone who had often times compared Singapore's PR/housing/NS policies with that of 'other countries' :)

It will be there if dig, the time spent working on the car must be recorded, money must be accounted for, parts must be ordered, and will have guarantee etc etc...

Stuff cannot disappear into a black hole.

Receipt may not say

"Illegal mod of exhaust system" - but it most likely will record that an exhaust system was installed, just not specify what type
