How much is the repair for the drive shaft? Mine having same issues with vibrations. My OC blame my driving style. Say tyres falling off already

Hello alfa gurus. I'm searching for an alfa after my subaru hunt went kaput. One question, can I put the auto gbox from the alfa 156 3.2 Q4 into the 2.2JTS? I'm guessing no because it's 4wd.. I don't like the selespeed's jerkyness when in auto mode but other than that I like everything else about the 156.. Or maybe the euro diesel version has a conventional gbox..

Count, what suspension are you on currently?

Eibach pro dampers and springs, lowered about 20mm only - should not be too bad for the CV joint. The flexing of the CV boot could have caused the tear (maybe the damaged shaft bends more than normal), and each time it begins to vibrate/knock I observe a small pin-hole tear by turning the wheel. Hopefully the new drive shaft would solve the problem.

You can google for Elite Drive Shaft at Sin Ming - they remove the shaft, clean, re-pack the grease with a new boot for $130 (inner and outer boot), about an hours job. Need appointment in advance cos they are usually busy.

In my case the repair didn't hold, and the tear appeared again within a few weeks. A new drive shaft is $1500 for 1 side, the drivers side. Given the big different in price it makes sense to go for the recon procedure first.

One thing about my drive shaft issue is that the vibration comes only when the accelerator is pressed (torque applied), when I let-go and cruise the car doesn't vibrate.

I see.... my boot tore only when the suspension wore out and started to leak. Only then it tore.

You might want to check your height again to see if its too low, or the damping has gone kaput, causing the damping to bottom out.

Terry, if you're getting vibrations when driving, it might not be the driveshaft, it could be your wishbones. Like Count said, the driveshafts will make noise only when you acclerate or when you're at full lock and moving off.

Thanks sabre and count.

Yes the issue I have as follows:

1. Vibration during acceleration

2. Increased vibration in proportion with speed and rpm

3. Vibration and knocking sound (like gpmg) stops when I release accelerator pedal.

4. Tires rotated, alignment redone, air pressure checked. Even resorted to changing tyres today cause spotted a crack. Still cannot...

Fyi thanks to the red red loud loud 159 owner I got 4 ps3 235/45 for only 230 a piece. Tyres made in France.

Things done over these 3 days.

1. Waited for hours at various workshops for them to diagnose vibrating issues.

2. Changed tyres to PS3 235/45 R17.

-> road noise higher than CSC3

3. Reconditioned drive shafts for 9 blues.al issues resolved. CV joint was dry as grease leaked/dripped/poured/evaporated due to tear in rubber boot.

4. Drove home with the biggest smile ever.

Just another week in the life of an alfa owner...

Chaona

I got the tyres from kah tyres at lavender. It's a few shops down from city tyres in the direction towards balestier road. However, those 4 were the last set. Sorry. They do carry the new falken 453 though. Maybe you can go down to take a look.
