to prevent theft?

If that person is a PRO, they will know that there is a kill switch and its typically hidden in a easy-to-reach place in order to be convenient for the driver.

A few years back, I did DIY a kill switch on my mazda3.

Steps are simple:

1. Remove back passenger's seat as the fuel tank in underneath.

2. Locate the fuel pump's power cable, use multi-meter to measure 12-volt supply on that cable.

3. Cut open that 12-volt power cable, connect both end with long cables and lay it under floor mat or follow the cable harnss, lay the long cable to the "hidden" locate where you want to hide the switch.

4. Connect a on/off switch to the long cables.

It doesn't cost me a penny as I have spare cables and switch, took me about 1.5 hours to slowly enjoy the DIY's fun.

Once the switch is off, the fuel pump will stop and since nomore fuel supply to the engine, the car will stall, can crank but engine won't start running.

* for point 3, you may also trace the fuel pump's cable from the fuse box.
