‘We can bring A-listers to Thailand’: PM Srettha plans concerts, visa-free travel to boost tourism

BANGKOK – Thailand Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin said on Feb 22 his government plans to roll out more measures to boost tourism, including incentives to lure global artistes to stimulate South-east Asia’s second-biggest economy.

Speaking at a government forum, he said the tourism industry was expected to grow enormously over the next four years, as it recovers from record lows caused by the pandemic.

Mr Srettha also mentioned musician Taylor Swift’s highly anticipated, sold-out concerts in Singapore in March, saying Thailand should aim for similar events.

“We can bring A-listers and world-class acts to Thailand. This must be done,” he said.

He added the government will offer visa-free travel, change the rules on drinking alcohol at concerts, and adjust operating hours of entertainment venues and when alcohol can be sold.

Thailand has waived visas for citizens of China, India and other countries in an effort to attract tourism dollars.

It received about 28 million foreign tourists in 2023 versus a record of nearly 40 million pre-pandemic, with spending of 1.91 trillion baht (S$71.5 billion). In 2024, the government expects about 34 to 35 million foreign visitors. REUTERS

So I spent the weekend in Singapore celebrating the last day of Chinese New Year with family on Saturday. The 4 days trip to Singapore was finally over on Monday. 

I always like to take a walk around the center of the city especially where the Merlion is located also because this is close to the hotel. Here are some photos I took during one of the walks

Seems like its back to normal and the tourists are back especially Chinese tourists

When I visit Singapore, I always like to eat the local food and these are some of my favourites:

In my previous trip to Singapore for Chibese New Year I witnessed a spectacular lion dance performance at the hotel where I was staying, thought I share with you guys

One early morning I think was Saturday went to Chinatown market's food centre for breakfast

One of my must do must eat item while I am in Singapore is traditional Hainanese curry rice and my favourite is at Beo Crescent

One day we took a walk to Suntec City mall and ventured into the food court

Many choices but decided to have Yong Tau Foo from this stall

Was pretty crowded as it was a Sunday

As we had only 4 nights in Singapore our first dinner was at Holy Crab located in Cathay's Kempinski Hotel

Dinner on Sunday was planned at Tiong Bahru's Ting Heng Seafood Restaurant

Upon arrival was met with a surprise. As Sunday was the 16th day of the first month of the new year it is also the birthday of the monkey god as Taoists believe. Directly opposite the restaurant is the monkey god temple. On arrival there was a procession, really interesting, not seen this for decades so this was the scene there

Finally the last meal before catching the flight in the afternoon was Singapore chicken rice. We went to the Stirling Road Market and at a Singapore chicken rice stall known as Sin Kee

Yesterday was Saturday. Morning went to the market to buy some eggs and prawns and some vegetables for the new week ahead. Stopped for coffee and eggs for breakfast

Bought 3 boxes each box of 10 freshly made puffs costs only $3.75

Actually one of Ting Heng’s specialties is their steam boat. When you visit this restaurant one could easily see half the occupied tables order steam boat. The freshness of their fish and vegetables is commendable. 
 

Had steamboat 4 months ago when I visited Singapore and came here for dinner here are the pics
