When i just took delivery of the car, it has the same kind of fuel consumption. What i have added is a pair of mag and a six point grounding. It does help and cut the consumption from 9km/litre to 11km/litre. (but take note mine is manual and maybe driving patterns are diff....)

Recently bought an 8 month old Matrix (black)1.6A. [sunny] Like the car so far. But there are people who are against Korean car. Dunno why..

Quite worried as ppl said this car is a fuel drinker. Heard about Magfuel and like to know if any of you guys out there are using it. Or is there any good ones that is legal & do not void the warranty. Are there ways to save fuel..

Just topped up S$30/- of fuel on Sunday evening and now it's already 1/4 to empty and can only last me for 3 days.Usage 80% expressway. Pls help.... [:(]

Hi Matrixian,

I bought my Matrix because I liked it a lot. Even now the more I look at my car the more attractive I find it. I love my Matrix.

I'm quite concerned with my fuel consumption as the feedback I gather is that the some other Matrix drivers can achieve up to 11~12 km/litre while mine is only 8~9 km/litre. I'm currently trying to look into my driving habit and try not to ram it so much but can't help it when going up some slopes.

As for the overdrive, I have no idea what it does. My guess is that it is used in situations like when driving in Malaysia on the expressway. Not sure what will happen when driving on daily basis. Anyone know can tell me?

Cheers

Hi matrixian,

I have been driving my matrix for over a year now. I was a little disappointed at the beginning with the low fuel consumption, but a little adjustments with my driving style and a few mods on my car have made the difference. My car now gives constantly around 11 - 12. Believe me, for 1.2 tonne body, this figure is quite shiok enough [thumbsup]

Firstly, I had to come to terms with the fact that matrix is just a family car. No point ramming the engine to get more power. It just won't work and will burn more and more fuel. I instead, learned to just enjoy the high top and roomy comfort of matrix cabin.

But of course, on malaysian highway, matrix is very steady even when i touch 160km/hr speed. No vibrations and no stress. At high speeds, i m sure matrix is competitor to beat. [sunny]

My current mod list

1. KNN filter

2. Grounding

3. CAI

4. ACE SPeed cables + denso iridium spark plugs

5. Broquet B30

6. Strut bars ( for better handling)

My last mod was CAI and it was 6 months back. Since then i haven't done any mod, 'cos i m already well satisfied with the results and enjoying my ride every day [nod].

Regarding overdrive, all i know is that it is used to lower the gear, so as to give the additional push when u need it. Specially when u want to overtake somebody. Engaging overdrive will burn more fuel since u r pushing the engine more by lowering the gear. I seldomely use it, may be once a while to just keep it in check. thats it. If you are into saving fuel, engaging Overdrive is a BIG NO-NO.

Erm,

I thought overdrive is GOOD for saving fuel?

It is the 4th gear in our auto transmission.

When you press the small button on your gear lever, you actually DISENGAGE overdrive

and force the car to use 1 to 3 gears only. You will also see a 'OD OFF' in your control panel when you do that.

Check your owner's manual to verfiy what I had said.

Hi Shumbo,

I'm keen to know what are the points that you ground.

As to my understanding, these are the points that need to be grounded.

1. Fender Near Battery Terminal (Chassis)

2. Engine Hoist attachment (Cylinder Head)

3. Transmission of Cylinder Block

4. Intake Manifold / Surge Tank

5. Fire wall

6. Generator

7. Alternator

8. Fender Opposite of Battery Terminal (Chassis)

Besides the above points, what are the grounding points that are suppose to be done?

Thanks.

yes exactly, overdrive is in fact refering to the highest gear (4th for matrix)in the gear box. thus turning it on is more fuel efficient since u are now using 4th gear at high speed instead of 3rd gear when OD is off. OD is normally turned off when u need to engage 3rd gear in places like uphill or downhill, or for overtaking. [nod][thumbsup]

Hi Matrixian, hope the following will help you:

- KNN filter cost about S$85 with the copper adapter. Can purchase from Speedworks

- grounding cost ranging from $60 to $100. Eg is Autobacs. It uses the Japan cables which is effective. Alternatively, u can DIY which cost u less than $30. Buy cables from Sim Lim

- CAI. You can go to Matrix Club M/M workshop at Toh Guan that cost you around $50.

- Spark plugs $68

- Cable >$100

- Broquet. Got few types but price ranging from $250 to $500

- strut bars $90

hey slueth,

thanks for the detailed info thumbsup.gif ..

matrixian,

None of the above mods mentioned by me or slueth will void the warrenty. no worries brother nod.gif

if u need to priorities ur mod, then go as per below.

1. Grounding.

2. KNN filter

3. Denso spark plug and ACE Speed cables.

After this give ur car sometime to adjust and settle...u should see good difference in fuel consumption and power ...

4. Broquet..

Strut bar is for better handling specially when you do sharp turns at high speeds. [nod]

Besides this i forgot two other mods

1. Air filter for the aircons. Matrix aircons do not come with air filters like many other makes[furious] . This is why sometime u can smell fumes or bad odour inside the cabin even though all doors and windows are tightly sealed. [bounce1] You can install the filters at TWL, 354K Alexandra Rd, Singapore (contact nancy, 6475 5592 ). Cost arounf S$30 - 40.

2. Plugging heater hose running inside the cabin. If u feel ur aircon is not powerful enough, it is better to plug off the aircon's heater hose. Anyway, in singapore we hardly use the heater.no point carrying this unnecessary weight [shakehead] .

You can do this at komoco for S$ 25 -35. This is the best mod i have done and now my matrix cabin is extremely cold, even in sunny afternoons [nod] . And the best part, it helps to cut off aircon very often since the aircon is able to maintain the optimum cabin temp with much ease now. This results in saving fuel and maximising power.

HiShumbo,

Thanks for the wonderful info.

U're right about the air filter for the aircon. When I first drove the car, I commented to my husband that there's carbon moonoxide smell in the car even though the doors are tightly closed. so this is the reason why. Thanks for the valuable info, pal.

I will do those listed in your note. Thanks a zillion.

Hi Matrixian,

I think year 2002 Matrix has this problems. My colleagu drive a year 2002 Matrix and he faces the same problems just like you.

For me, i'm driving a 2003 Matrix and that i do not face the same problem. I do not have a filter in the air-con compartment. When i was in TLW, Nancy did recommend me the filter but i do not need it as i feel that mine is not that serious.

Anyway, the air-con filter is S$35.00 to be exact. Its original from Komoco and its in a square shape. The filter is folded like a fan with zig-zag. Looks fine and effective to filter all the dirt.

Good luck....

Hi Shumbo,

You are right, just checked with Komoco a while ago.

According to them, when the OD is on (light off) the car is at the 4th gear. When OD is off (light on) it's on 3rd gear. It will burn more fuel when you off the OD (light on). It will show the OD light on/off at the dashboard.
