Davey Neutral Newbie July 11, 2002 Share July 11, 2002 Hi Dudes, Just some update on DIY using Hammerite Paint on decorative Aluminium mesh for the front grille ... Bought a small can of "Hammer Black" Hammerite paint at Home-Fix for about $10. The manufacturer claims that Hammerite paint is able to paint over all sorts of material including slippery Aluminium and even Rust. Opened it last night and started painting. The paint is quite liquid out of the can, but when it gets onto your brush and then onto the metal, it turns quite STICKY. Need to work fast to spread the paint evenly. Completed the whole grille in about 20 minutes and left to dry. Have a bit of problems reaching the tiny crevices/corners of the grille as the paint is not that fluid. So need to check and do second coat to ensure evenness. By next morning, paint is dry enough to handle. Can even bend the aluminium without the paint flaking off. I will install the grille within the next few days before the paint fully cures. BTW, the grille feels good, as if its been coated with a layer of rubber/plastic. Looks professionally done even with an amateur painter. [angelic] According to the instructions of the can, paint will take up to 6 weeks to cure. Oh yes, need to get good thinner as the paint is super sticky and difficult to wash off the brush. Will be finding more uses for the paint. But in the meantime, anybody wants to try "Hammer Black" Hammerite paint, I still got a whole can left! p.s. Doc, how about painting your grille RED, WHITE and GREEN like the italian flag?! ↡ Advertisement
Sparetyre Neutral Newbie July 12, 2002 Share July 12, 2002 Bro, fantastic report lah. A+ !!! Will try to meetup with you to checkout your latest VRG. New rims, new grille, new ICE.... But can only do this in 2-3 weeks time as work load is very heavy now. Take care and see you soon.
Turbobrick Neutral Newbie July 12, 2002 Share July 12, 2002 Hi Davey, by any chance you used some thinnner to premix the hammerite paint? The thinner will help in ensuring a smooth application as the paint direct from the can is relatively thick.

Madarmour Neutral Newbie July 12, 2002 Share July 12, 2002 Bro, you should have thinned out the paint with thinner first before applying. It would be much easier then! It will cure faster too. Well, maybe the next time.
Davey Neutral Newbie July 12, 2002 Author Share July 12, 2002 Didn't pre-mix the paint with thinner cos no experience and thus follow instructions on the can. The instructions did mention about pre-mixing with thinner but it was meant for spray / airbrush applications only. [angelic] Anyway, managed to get it on but next time will try to pre-mix. But I wonder if the "look and feel" of the final product would still remain the same ... stay tuned!
Turbobrick Neutral Newbie July 12, 2002 Share July 12, 2002 The thinning will help but too much thinner will mean more headaches as the paint may flow so easily that it forms blobs when it dries.....I hope U know what I mean. Thinning is meant to be done out of the paint's can so it's not pouring the thinner into the paint's can directly.
Fabiaman 1st Gear July 13, 2002 Share July 13, 2002 I have black & gold hammerite shared between myself and Nilkz. Still have at least half a bottle left... challenge is that we both dunno where it is now! We bought them from Carrefour to paint the brake calipers and drums, was pretty easy and effective. The only worry is that these paint can potentially act as a thermal insulator which traps the heat generated at the calipers. The idea of getting the Hammerite to paint the calipers originates from none other than TB!
Huggable Clutched July 13, 2002 Share July 13, 2002 Huggable has about 1/2 can of Hammerite RED, can paint S'pore flag! Let me know if you need it. Hi Dudes, p.s. Doc, how about painting your grille RED, WHITE and GREEN like the italian flag?!
