TOKYO -- Troubled automaker Mitsubishi Motors Corp. said on Tuesday that it would spend 20 million yen (US$168,000) recalling 37,000 sporty Lancer Evolution sedans at home and abroad to fix an exhaust problem.

Moisture in the exhaust pipe could clog up an oxygen sensor, causing it to crack and malfunction. As a result, the car may release more exhaust fumes than necessary, explained a Mitsubishi spokesman.

Evo, the super car

THE Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VI is the hottest production car in Japan today. It's a boxy sedan with muscular bulges an incredibly potent turbo-charged engine and performance that rivals the likes of the Porsche 911.

The Evo, as it is commonly known, is a high-strung all-wheel-drive apex clipper that's based on Mitsubishi's world championship rally car.

Its 140hp/litre, 1997cc engine is coupled to a titanium alloy turbine turbocharger that delivers 17psi of boost, which enables the 1400kg sedan to scorch the pavement to 60mph in 4.3 seconds.

'We will replace the oxygen sensors with new ones,' he said.

Some 32,000 Lancer Evolutions would be recalled in Japan and 5,000 from overseas markets, mainly Britain, New Zealand and the Middle East.

Mitsubishi has received 14 reports of such a problem, but it has not caused any accidents.

The recall covers vehicles made between Jan 7, 1998 and April 3, 2002.

Mitsubishi's image was tarnished after it confessed in Aug 2000 to having failed to inform the authorities about at least 64,000 customer complaints over faulty vehicles since 1977, opting to repair the vehicles itself instead of issuing costly model-wide recalls. -- AFP

Yah... at least they take the responsibility... unlike our dear Microsoft... when they realised that there's too many bug... they just reprogramme a new version of the software.... and get pple to purchase it..... wow!! imagine all the car manufacturer were to do that.... hmm......

Ermmm... actually, they do release free patches of their software on their websites. Much as I dislike monopolistic companies, Microsoft isn't completely evil...

Anyway, straying back vaguely to the original topic, had a black Evo7.5 GTA end up next to me yesterday and all I can say is that, boy, the driver must be really relieved to be stuck in the jam we were both in with an auto..... [sweatdrop][whip]

....which in the near future, I hear, could be released only to customers who are on a service maintenance contract..... [mad]
