Yes. Interest is so high, no resale value (COE, PARF), maintenance cost high, what else??

New car: Cheap, interest low, maintence low, 3 years warranty, but oso no resale value.

Used car with COE, Expensive, interest okie, maintenance okie, resale high, but no one wants to buy. [dead]

ESI is not worth buying, especially now all 2nd hand car is not worth buying unless the owner is willing to let go at lost or paper value. worst case is coe, when selling a coe car, u can only sell at paper value unless you can buy at 1-2k abv paper value, than coe car is best avoided.

Actually, think it this way. All cars will have a significant drop in resale value, due to the new law/rules imposed on the OMV and ARF. So why not choose a brand new budget low car?

Calculate this: New car cost about $70k(average). Times the interest of 2.3% for 7 years, total will be $81k. Used COEd car: $45k(average). Times 4.6% for 7 years, total will be $60k. It does not have a differences of about $20k but the road tax is increased by 10% every year till 150%!! [knife]

Sum up IMO:

Old COEd car:

1. Maintenance cost high.

2. High interest.(double of new)

3. Road tax increased till 150%.

New car:

1. Maintenace low + 3 years warranty.

2. INterest lower.

3. Road tax is normal. [angel]

Is ESI worth buying? What are the things to look out for when buying ESI?

Give it a serious thought over. If you are able to spend a lil' bit more to get a car with PARF or a new car, go for it. Don't restrict on COE cars cos the cash upfront is minimal. There are plently of hidden costs involved and you will regret in time to come. Do reconsider [thumbsup]

The only COE cars worth getting are those that are left 1-2yrs and you can afford to pay cash upfront for them. Usually you will have to fork out 1-2k above paper value. Used car dealer needs to eat too.

Renew COE or scrap it after the COE expires is up to you. But like me, if you choose the 1-2yrs that the COE is left to fine tune and know the car, you can opt for renewal. You can save a comfortable sum of money which cushion against an amount you will borrow for the renewed COE.

After all that is done, you got yourself a relatively cheap car to run about that is entirely yours.

Do not go for the loans the dealers are offering. With the scenario above, if you can get an unsecured loan which allows you flexibility in paying off, you are still better off. You can even pay off everything in 1 or 2yrs!

Civic ESi that is left 1-2yrs? I don't think any exists right now.

I beg to differ that maintenance costs are high. I believe a lot of COE car owners are often neglected which I believe has led to the high cost of maintenance. The cost for repairs and replacements might not be more expensive than a PARF car that has had its warranty period lapsed. Its just that parts are mostly reconditioned or remanufactured.

There is no shortage of parts for COE cars as many can be found in scrap heaps and even eBay. But Singaporeans being Singaporeans are accustomed to be fed. Haggling and even doing legwork to keep something going is a chore to them. [shakehead] Want cheap, you will need to work to get it cheap.

Thanks for all the knowledge u all had given me, i was very tempted to get an ESI because i saw in an ad selling for 22k with coe till 2011. Maybe will change my mind after listening to ur views. Any more comments or views?

True, thats why i stated IMO... In my opinion [:p] ... [;)] Everyone has their own thinking, concept and ways of managing or looking at things. I prefer stability rather than worrying. Buying a COEd car can worry me on which is the next part to be defective. A new car, on the other hand, saves me these worries as its under warranty... [nod]

And most of Singaporeans look things on its surface. Hidden cost is the most annoying.
