Haa! I can safely answer your question.

Soluna auto tranny is from japan. It was stamp on the gearbox and i found it when the whole car was jack up during servicing. [laugh]

Yup. Now have to wait n see if the thai toyos have the same reliability as the jap cars.

First cvt i know was used on 1 lit subaru justy(ecvt) n it had many problems. Not as strong s normal AT so they can only use on 1 lit car.

Now they able to strengthen it so they try on bigger cars but still not fully tested n proven.

Thats why i say have to wait a couple of years then see. Those now on market r actually ''guinea Pig'' cars for testing n then they try to work out the bugs as they come along.

Technology has been around for many many years but they cud not find a strong enough material for the belt until kevlar came about. Now they try n see how it stands up to the day to day use.

Yes. Auto tranny is from japan but what about the other parts? Also the assembly n QC is different from japan standards.

Many things to consider. Just like Mitsu n Proton. Proton also use engine n gearbox from japan b4 but these 2 cars have different overall standard. Otherwise can classify Proton as jap car also. [:p]

Low cc cars DO need manual trans, the auto trans just cannot deliver enough low end torque due to slip.

CVT invented by DAF? Didn't know also, Volvo owns the DAF group but concentrate their efforts in DAF in trucks only, so perhaps Volvo trucks are equipped with CVT?

CVT sud b using kevlar as its the only material thats strong enough. Earlier belts were not strong enough to take the stress. Even kevlar might have a problem taking the stress of the new high power engines so need to wait to see if they start to give problems after a couple of years.

New technology is not always good as its not fully tested n proven. The early buyers r always the guinea pigs used to test these products.

For chain drive CVT's, the smoothness is not there although i know they experimented with it. I dont know if they r using them in any cars though.

Can't agree more about new owners being guinea pigs to new technologies.

Btw, noticed that the CVT equipped cars are not the most powerful models in the lineup? Aka Lancer 1.6, Justy 1.0, etc.

U won't see a Galant VR4 or Legacy RSK with a CVT tranny right? (Hopefully not too!) [:p]

The new gen-X tranny using hydraulic actuated clutches (aka Ferrari 360F1, Alfa 156 Selespeed, Opel Easytronic) will be the next "in" thing [laugh][laugh]

Yup, the DAF cars ended up being the Volvo 3xx series. Dunno about the trucks, I suspect not due to the much larger torque involved.

Well the DAF cars were shortlived but the trucks are still strong till today, that's why Volvo sold off their automotive division to Ford but retained their trucks/bus and marine divisions [;)]

any corolla owner have checked the air-con cond water hose? i happened to check the engine compartment and realise that it is very short!! the water actually being collected on the chasis before it drips to the floor. i worry abt the corrosion. [unsure]

Scwee... it does not matter, that portion is rust proof

If you extend the pipe and if the pipe happens to be the lowest point, you going to have problems if you hit against something and it tangle your pipe up.

Spray WB40 regularly or Telfon coat will do.. this is a small matters.

What you need to worry are the bots and nuts below which are not rust proof.

Ask your mechanic to jack up the car, take a walk underneath and be surprise !! There are more important things to worry about. !! [sly]

btw, bother to show your corolla pic here?

i do not really like the original body kits available here. i saw a corolla at chinatown fitted with malaysia toyota artis fittings, like nice, may source for some during my next malaysia trip.
