Presea 3rd Gear October 14, 2002 Share October 14, 2002 (edited) My stock brake drums were really neglected (as Gadgeter pointed out to me yesterday). They were rusty, and looked quite out of place behind my sports rims. So....I decided to spend an hour today doing a makeover for them. I found an old can of spray paint (Tamiya! German Grey, used for F16 model) Some Tamiya top coat and proceeded to remove the wheel. Sandpapered and cleaned....., I sprayed 3 coats of paint on one drum....and the can was empty! (airfix are normally quite small...and this was half used....so the can didn't last as long ) Then I sprayed some protective top coat (2 coats) and replaced the wheel. Now I have one rusty drum brake and one in "German Grey!" Should finish this project by the end of the week.....sigh....maybe I'll spray "Chrome" over it after all! Cheers. here's some pics of my handiwork! Edited October 14, 2002 by Presea ↡ Advertisement
Fabiaman 1st Gear October 15, 2002 Share October 15, 2002 Hi Presea... nice job... does look better now with the solid Momo rims. I did my as well with Nilkz abt a year back using Hammerite paint - blue colour and it looked quite nice with the drum being slapped with a new paint. Not much use on the front brake caliper though as it collects brake dust very quickly.
Civic Neutral Newbie October 15, 2002 Share October 15, 2002 I also use hammerite paint !!!! red colour
Fabiaman 1st Gear October 15, 2002 Share October 15, 2002 Hah ! I think quite a number of those who painted the caliper or drums used Hammerite... does the job neatly!

Presea 3rd Gear October 15, 2002 Author Share October 15, 2002 (edited) thanks.... now finished with the other side. Finally Balanced! I think I am going to paint my front calipers in STEEL colour. I found my model kit paints, and I have a bottle of Testors "Steel". Should be enough to cover both calipers. I think there's more parts to be painted....like the wheel well, ...will put that off for now because I need to clean each one with the wheel off, dry...then spray (Matt Black!)....need to spend 1 whole day. Should be enough to cover both calipers. You so ON..... I think I better paint my brake drum too...... what colour do you think will suit mine?? Front Calipers For my front calipers... I used paint it with my paint marker....same as the one used for my tires. some people said it wouldn't last... but for me... it lasted 1 years.... Wheel Wall. I was too lazy to take out my wheels... I just spray the wall without taking out the wheels.... I sprayed silver colour[;)] Edited October 16, 2002 by Gadgeter
Unknown_G7 Neutral Newbie October 16, 2002 Share October 16, 2002 Normally people will use what type of paint for the drum so that it can be more lasting? After painting, do we need to apply coating?
Gadgeter 2nd Gear October 16, 2002 Share October 16, 2002 I'm not sure what others will use... For me... It have to be cheap (so that I wun be heart pain if I make a mess out of it).... I dun believe in spending more than $15 for my paint...

Presea 3rd Gear October 16, 2002 Author Share October 16, 2002 (edited) Aiyoh....I keep using paint for Airfix...... for rear drums, they work because there's not too much heat generated. And with a a couple of top coat layers.....it feels fine. Today I did the left front caliper, with base coat and STEEL colour (tonight I'll post the pics) Then drove to AMK..town...AMK...Airport (fetch my in-laws) ....then AMK... I felt the caliper and it was a little sticky. Maybe I'll have to apply top coat Or else I'll redo it in Hi-temp Silver paint. That one works...but it's in a can, so I need to do a lot of masking tape to cover so many places ..... Spray the walls without taking out the wheels.... I can't do that...not enough space to hold a can inside. And I don't want to paint the tyres as well Edited October 16, 2002 by Presea
Presea 3rd Gear October 16, 2002 Author Share October 16, 2002 I used Tamiya spray can because that's what I found around the house + top coat for model airplane. $8 for paint, $10 for top coat (they come in small cans, so they don't last that long) I found a high temp spray paint for $8.50, and it is the best so far, but the colours are kind of limited. It's a bigger can, but not as even when spraying.... Problem is plastic modelling paints do not stand up to temp that well.
Unknown_G7 Neutral Newbie October 16, 2002 Share October 16, 2002 What brand is that high temp spray paint?
Presea 3rd Gear October 16, 2002 Author Share October 16, 2002 It's RJ A common brand. They also have normal spray paint ($5.90) in assorted colours. I got it at Vinmart.
Presea 3rd Gear October 16, 2002 Author Share October 16, 2002 Anyone knows of a TOP COAT that can be applied by brush....? And where to get it as well .... I don't want to spray it....because the calipers are kinda hard to isolate...
