Dudemobile Neutral Newbie February 8, 2005 Share February 8, 2005 Well I had a near disasterous incident as well. Went for servicing and was told to change manual gearbox oil at 60k. No worries, paid $120 for the gearbox oil change. After the servicing, went to collect the car, felt the gear very stiff and not smooth at all. Got my dad to test the car and he also could feel the gears very stiff and rough. Went back to servo, and they suggested adding additive. Paid another $20 for it. But whenever car is cold, very difficult to engage gears. So end result they cannot fix it. Gears still did not engage smoothly as b4 the service. Strange that a simple gearbox oil change can cause the gearbox so much problems. No choice, went to CA. Told them to change the oil again. Ask them to check the old oil. Found out that Servo only filled up with 1.5litres. Octy specs is 2.5litres (Jap cars are usually 1.5litres). Also after changing the oil at CA, engine noise went down and gear engage very smoothly even before moving off in the mornings. Dun know how much damage done already as I was trying to figure out what went wrong for almost a month b4 sending it to CA. I HATE the prices at CA, but felt so relieved to get the car fixed, and didn't even mind paying $200 for. Now there always a grin on my face as I work thru the gears, like a hot knife thru butter.... My opinion is that not all mechanics will have the specs and docs, so sometimes for major open surgery, it's better to go to experts ( you wouldn't let your GP do a bypass even though he'd learn't it in Med School rite?). I learned it the hard way cos I busted my timing belt in my old ride at 100km/h in skudai JB and paid a whopping $2.5k for what could have just $800 at komoco (hyundai). I paid $600 for the outside workshop. If my dad didn't have the kangtao, it would have cost me easily $5k. I had to have the entire top half of my engine changed. Best part, according to VAG specs, dun need to change the Manual Gearbox oil at all unless leaking or gearbox damaged. VAG bro's please check with international sources, you might not need to change the auto gearbox oil as well, as they might also be considered "maintainance free". SG workshops can be very famous for changing gearbox oil, when you actually dun need to. Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

I bought 1 bottle (think it's the 4 L type? looks like engine oil size) and I saw the mechanic pouring almost all in. Probably left a little only. Then he commented that my car's gear box is bigger than the norm. Actually I thought the standard is fill until overflow? Jhoo Neutral Newbie February 10, 2005 Share February 10, 2005 I my cordy bcos of a bad gerbox. Hence I got Servo to change ATF once I had my 2nd hand tody. Gearbox was fine before change, after change encountering hard engaging during cold start in the morning. Complained to Dennis & he said that it has nothing to do with the ATF, he also suggest to me about the additive too! Looks like I have to check my gearbox too, did you know which mech is handling your car? Dennis is a resonable person and i have no problem dealing with him. Sometimes, I have doubts about the mechs doing their work diligently. It only seems to me that the mechs attitude is getting from good to bad, from bad to worse! Dudemobile Neutral Newbie February 10, 2005 Share February 10, 2005 Sorry, but when I went there the first time, I had to leave my car there and go to office. Second time I didn't take any chances and stayed there whilst they drained the fluid and topped up with the additive. Could also be that the oil used for my gearbox was not the correct vicousity (thickness). Hence the drop in engine noise after the changing of oil at CA. The engine noise was always audiable during gear 5 cruising. Knew it was something to do with the gearbox, but didn't know where to start. Advise is to check with international forum websites to find out how much and what type of oil your tody needs. This way you can be very sure that when you replace it, it gets what is specifically required. Not some generic brand. Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...
Skodarr Neutral Newbie February 10, 2005 Share February 10, 2005 Yo DM, is your tody a Octavia 1.6L AT? If so, I believe it's a 4 gear transmission. You can always drop by at Servo to reset your GearBox ECU to default settings and erase any fault codes... From there, you can determine if there's anything wrong with it... Tifosi Neutral Newbie February 11, 2005 Share February 11, 2005 I had my aircon flap closed permanently recently, since then it feels great, no more "outside smell" and the aircon feel even cooler. It might not be th pollen filter, it just happen that the aircon flap is not working at all. The job to close the flap is quite simple. I have done it myself with some guidance from Servo though. Jhoo Neutral Newbie February 11, 2005 Share February 11, 2005 I trust that Servo supply the correct ATF as I'm not the only 1.8A that's they're working on. I have personally ask them which ATF and they confirmed original OEM VAG cars. Let just hope that particular mech didn't and filled with the brake fluid! The ATF that CA supplied is different from Servo? I will check my owners manual again for the specs but sometimes they just print ".....refer to SEAT authorised workshop......." I have actually sucessfully removed the pollen filter, it seems quite clean to me without any fowl smell. There is a flap underneath the pollen filter, is that it? Rarely you'll see the men on the ground as passionate as the boss, cos to the men "work to get the paycheck". I'm also guilty of it sometimes as it's very difficult to relate to the business owners. Like in NS, how many men will be enthusiastic about a mission like their CO, or OC? The damn manual is as useless as a brochure, IMO... Everything refer to agent...
