Does frequent redlining uses up engine oil?

I noticed that if I constantly high rev and max speed on my drives up north, the engine oil tend to decrease a bit. First I thought it was leaking but on inspection, there was no visible trace of a leakage.

 

Any info welcome.

It's not supposed to unless U got worn piston rings and burning oil. My brick didn't use up any significant amount of oil for 5yrs before I sold him away.

Dun think so. My babe doesn't consume oil and I redlined her pretty regularly.

I drove a jap car once to kuantan many years back. And if the driving you do is like me, rev real hard playing with the gears and high rev 90% of the time. The oil level drop from full to slightly above half between the high and low level mark on the dip stick.

 

That's is normal if there are no leak. After realising that, I control my revving and the level remain with little difference in level.

 

No worries, bring spare oil to top it up. However, occasional high rev does not affect the oil level.

Mike... how do you feel when u redline the car. I never redline my car because my heart ache when I rev it above 4500 rpm, the noise being unbearable like as if straining my engine.

 

Nope, for alight footed driver like me, my oil level never drop.

 

Heard it does drop for mineral engine oil as time goes by... But not for synthetic, as it is not supposed to drop by much during driving

Doc & I drives Alfa Romeos, red-lining the engine is the way of life, for an Alfista. Last night, I went for a drive up to Mersing, with a friend, it didn't stop him from falling asleep next to me.

I guess we have the same driving pattern and Mersing to Kuantan is great for high rev and gear shifting when overtaking.

It's the first time he's listening to an Alfa Twin cam at high-revs. He drives an Alfa33 boxer, but it's still running-in after an o/haul.

EXHILARATION! My babe's engine sound is music to my ears! If you've never redlined before, you've gotta do it incrementally. Start with 4000rpm first, 5000rpm, 6000 and above. Suggest weekly interval with at least one revs a day! My redline is 7000, what's yours?

Then how you know that the oil level will drop once you stress the engine? Based on hearsay only, rite? If don't try how are you gonna know?

As far as I know, given the same viscosity, the mineral and synthetic should not make a difference in oil consumption. The synthetic oil is chemically more homogenous and will last longer than the mineral oil.

Hmmmmmm.........been through the JB - Merisng stretch a few time but didn't notice significant oil consumption leh. The question is, given the type of driving, is oil evaporation signigicant?

I must say,its not the place that affect the oil consumption but rather the way the engine is work upon and the duration.

If you were to rev hard and keep rpm on the upper end of the limit and maintain it for long duration of time some oil will escape.

Either through evaporation because of the excess heat generated in the upper top half(valve/tappet area) and also some oil will tend to burn during the combustion process especially for older engine where the tolerence and clearances are not so close and tight.

For short duration the losses are insignificant and most driver won't realise it. Anyway, majority of driver put the oil level at full or above full mark. even if drop also don't know unless is obvious.

 

Newer engine, have better control of oil loss during high rev driving. My experience then was on a charade many year back.

I agree with you that older cars may consume more oil at high revs. Also dependent on viscosity of oil used.
