Not twin-plate clutches, but two separate clutch systems, one for odd gears, another for even gears. Pls re-read my earlier post.

Popping in or out is done totally outside of the 'live' system. So you can get near-zero efficiency losses, since the DSG does NOT need to "ease off" shifts just to get smooth upshifts. It just doesn't have to resort to what the Selespeed Ver 5.0 (I believe that is what its most-recent incarnation in the facelifted 147 2.0) is trying to do.

Jerk-free too, since clutching and de-clutching are done totally in the background, since at any one time, only one clutch system is 'live'.

That's the beauty of VW/Audi's new DSG system. Its one-of-a-kind.

You really have to test-drive the new GTi to appreciate. Drag it from 0-100 in 6+ seconds and you almost don't feel the upshift blips at all. You can put the GTA by its side and it will give it a good fight, albeit a puny TC 2L 4-pot @ 200 bhp.

But personally, I think the GTA V6 engine still has more character than the GTi's IL-4 FSI engine. But it is VW's superb DSG we are discussing here in this thread.

Ideally for me, is a car with Alfa's GTA engine sync'd with VW's DSG. [;)]

But..hoh... that also means it have one more equipment to fail... imagine Sillyspeed only one set of actuator already cost a bomb when need to replace. I wonder how much it will cost when the 2 clutch fails... but hoh.. will it still function if one fail?? hmm.. since its odd and even clutch.. can it skip one gear.. heee.. jus a stupid question...

Well then, you have to worry about the thousands of other components in your car that might fail too. The need for QC is unquestioned, double clutch or no. And, being sequential, it doesn't skip gears...

No lah... I dun mean the way of QC... but rather, the cost of replacing when it fail..not IF it fail...

For Selespeed, there is a wear period, its a matter of when it have to be replaced. Unless DSG guarantee that its will not fail in our context of 10yr.. then its great...otherwise, I figure it will cost a lot...

But then normal auto trannies fail too, some before 10 years.

A Merc's E-Class auto transmission will cost ~$8K-10K to replace new ... so I was advised.

Do you know how much a Selespeed trans would cost to replace new?

Just for comparison / knowledge.

Thanks.

I dun have much clue on the cost of transmission if it fail in Alfa, havent heard of, but since its a manual box, it shouldnt be as much as a auto trannies..

Mostly the failure that need replacement is the Actuator part.. this is not cheap.. my friend jus get quoted for abt 2k + to get it replaced...

I do not know much abt DSG, but I guess its also using some actuators to simulate clutching for your left leg... for Alfa, its using hydraulic , so there are 2 parts that can fail, the pump and the actuator...

from what I know Opel easytronic is using electric actuator..

but seriously,... I really love the sillyspeed... no choice lah.. got a lazy left foot, but still want to drive manual... till now I havent actually driven City thruout a journey.. tried couple of times.. cannot get used to the gear change.. dun know when it wants to change, so I have been driving manual all these while.. even wife also prefer manual...

Then it's not about failing, but wear. Well if you think about it, having two clutches means each works with half the frequency of a normal one, which means double the working life, no? [;)]

yeah... I misunderstood your post. all along I thought the DSG controlled twin plates. not double plates... now I get it... wah... pretty awesome lei...

Yes. Handles much better than the Merc I had, but ride is not as cushy / pliant ... probably due to the standard profile-45 tyres fitted. But around fast bends and even high-speed road humps, you can feel the difference with F/R double-wishbones, compared to even the Merc's setup.

In addition 6-pot engine much smoother than my 4-pot Merc, during idling as well as at max revs.

The thing about Kompressor engines is that it develops max torque early at ~2,500 rpm, but then the 2L engine also runs out of breath early, by about 5,500 rpm. Its just a different engine design / drivability concept ... compared to IL-6, multi-valve NA engines which are more free-revving, but develops all the oomph at much higher rpms.

SAAB vs Honda? To each his own.

laugh.gif I am neither a Saab nor Honda owner.

Any news about the new IS? What's the engine and suspension setup like?

It is the IS250 that Borneo is likely to bring in.

Like the new GS300, it is a new V6 dual-VVTi engine.

No more the IL-6. So expect smoother operation, but less grunt at high rpm. [thumbsdown]

Engine block will be full aluminium [thumbsdown] , versus the out-going cast iron.

Expect more resonating NVH at certain rpm range(s), in return for a lowered unsprung weight. I guess Lexus will continue to keep the IS's near-50:50 weight distribution.

Also, like the new GS300, gone will be the double wishbone suspension setup for front and rear. The new IS250 will have double wishbones only for the front and the rear gets multi-link suspensions. Cost cutting? [thumbsdown]

Understand the new IS will continue to be manufactured by Kanto Auto Works, Toyota's subsidiary plant for their sportier models like Celica and Mark-X.

Steering assist will go full electric, or so I read in UK previews. [thumbsdown]

USA and UK markets will also get the IS350, yet another V-6 engine.

I think I will keep my IS200 [thumbsup] for a longer while now.
