Bigger is better?

There's little doubt that Porsche intends the new 991 to be attractive to a wider group of prospective buyers. The changes to the steering, the wider acceptance of PDK and the larger, more curvaceous body are all measures that push the 911 closer to the GT category -- though fortunately without any reduction of its sporting credentials.

Thus we'd expect buyers of vehicles like the Bentley Continental GT, Mercedes-Benz SL and even BMW 6 Series to consider the new 911 more seriously.

In the sportscar ranks, PCA says the key competitors are the Aston Vantage V8, Maserati Granturismo and selected AMG models. They include the (much) cheaper BMW M3, but rule out Jaguar XKR. With the new XK-RS on the way, we're not so sure.

And what about GT-R? PCA spokesperson Paul Ellis says: "GT-R is not a rival. People who buy the Nissan do so because they want our car and can't afford it."

Hahahaha. Very true to certain extend. GT2/3 and GTR? I would take the GT2/3 any day!

PCA spokesperson Paul Ellis says: "GT-R is not a rival. People who buy the Nissan do so because they want our car and can't afford it." <----- truth be told " we charge our customer 3-4 times more, but only give them similar performance as the GTR"

Sounds like he shiited in his pants and covered it up with such a statement...........

IMO:- technically both 911 and GTR are competent sports car in their own right, but the gap in price tags says alot ---------> some buyers are willing to pay 3-4 times more while getting more or less similar performance but much more perceived "brand / image" or whatever; others keep the balance for something else while still able to enjoy the performance and dont bother the so-called lack of image etc etc.

To be beaten (almost) by an upstart which has no history/heritage to talk about is not a good feeling, let alone shiiting in the pants. Although Porsche doesnt admit it, the people there are taking the challenge posed by GTR seriously.

btw, the first 911 hit the market in 1963, 48 years later, it's 'pushed' by the GTR made by a Jap bread&butter car maker who took less than a quarter of 48 years to come up with the GTR [:)]

Awesome in twisting the truth which is: Porsche gives the customer a car with similar performance as that of the GTR, but (over-) charges him 3-4 time more. :o

actually GTR has been around since 1969 and if u compare the 2 from back then, it was comparable power spec wise. just that locally, people in the 70s won't buy a GTR,they would get a brand status conscious porsche, hence its not well known on the heritage of the GTR.

Very low class comment by Porsche. And I'm speaking as a current owner.

This was the company that chickened out of picking up the gauntlet thrown down by Mini: http://www.autoblog.com/2010/06/10/followu...ad-atlanta-w-v/

It's OK if they want to act all snooty and decline challenges from companies they consider beneath them like Mini. But to go around talking trash about a major manufacturer like Nissan that's managed to make a car that outperforms most of Porsche's lineup at a fraction of the cost? That's just sad and bitter.

Porsche - don't make us owners malu, with all the stupid nonsense coming out of your PR machine. Consider this strike two. (Strike one was your selling out with the hideous Cayenne). [:p] The Nissan GTR is looking better and better for my next car.

this is quite true but the early GTRs (say those before the R32/33) were mainly for domestic consumption and were unknown to the general public outside Japan....

no doubt, but then sometimes it is the overall package of a car that counts rather than looking at speed alone.

when siao kar driver had limited budget, they buy speed. if got more than enough to spend, mostly buy brand (with speed of coz).

in terms of outright speed, handling, comfort, boot space, reliablility, mods potentials, running costs, etc etc... how do 911 measure up to GTR? (i am neutral)

A porsche costs about 2 times more than a GTR. The price for 'brand' is not really cheap but of course high networth buyers wont blink an eye to write the cheque for a porsche... [:)]
