  2. http://www.straitstimes.com/news/singapore/health/story/first-suspected-ebola-case-singapore-20140814 SINGAPORE - Singapore may have its first case of Ebola, the viral outbreak that has killed more than 1,000 people in West Africa. A Nigerian woman in her 50s was identified as a possible Ebola case by doctors at Gleneagles Hospital on Thursday morning. The woman is believed to have flown into Singapore recently and arrived at the hospital's emergency department with a fever. She was immediately isolated and transferred by ambulance to the Communicable Diseases Centre at Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH).
  3. Ebola virus strain found in Philippine swine http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/afp.../395583/1/.html A strain of the Ebola virus has been found in pigs at a farm north of the Philippine capital Manila MANILA: A strain of the Ebola virus has been found in pigs at a farm north of the Philippine capital Manila, the country's top agriculture official said Thursday. The Ebola-Reston strain, however, was believed to have affected only domestic livestock and had so far not jumped between species, said Agriculture Secretary Arthur Yap. This was the first Ebola case in swine, and the government was closely working with the World Health Organisation and the World Organisation of Animal Health in carrying out further tests, Yap said. "This is the first time Ebola has been detected in pigs, but this is not a human health issue, but an animal health problem," Yap told local radio. "There is no evidence that this could jump to humans," he said, adding that Ebola-Reston was different from three other African strains that cause deadly haemorrhagic fever, which has led to hundreds of human deaths in Africa. Yap said the farm, on the main island of Luzon, was being closely monitored. Farm hands and butchers had been tested, but results have so far come back negative, he said. Other pigs on the farm were not infected, while old stocks of meat had been burned as a precaution, he said. Yap reminded the public to buy pork only from markets inspected by agricultural officials and to cook the meat thoroughly. This was not the first time that the Ebola-Reston strain was found in the Philippines, Yap said. Fifteen years ago, several Filipinos were infected by the virus that apparently jumped from local monkeys. Only one of them developed a cold, that later went away, Yap said.
  4. As deadly as AIDS, there is an outbreak of the disease in Democratic Republic of Congo. So far 166 dead had been recorded. No known cure for such disease. This report came from CNA new as attach: GENEVA : The World Health Organisation (WHO) has confirmed a major outbreak of the deadly Ebola virus in the Democratic Republic of Congo, and said 166 deaths there since April could be linked to the disease. The outbreak of the highly-contagious Ebola haemorrhagic fever, in the Western Kasai province, was confirmed by specialist laboratories in the US and Gabon, the WHO said in a statement on its website. Speaking to journalists in Geneva Tuesday, a WHO spokesman stressed that another illness other than Ebola could yet be responsible for some of the deaths, possibly the Shigella infectious disease. Of five samples sent to one laboratory, all showed signs of Ebola. Ebola causes the patient to bleed under the skin and in severe cases, from the mouth, ears and eyes. The virus, which has no known cure, is highly infectious for those who come into contact with a victim's body fluids. Ebola had previously killed some 450 people in the DRC since 1976, and 1,200 people across the whole of Africa in the same period. - AFP/de If I am not mistaken, AIDS also orginated from Africa.
