  1. Was having "hanging" problems upon startup for my 2 yr old Win7 laptop and win7 installation keep hanging even after replacing to a new HDD. Was recommended this by a colleague. Does anyone here have prior experience to this free OS and how do you solve syncing music to an Ipod?

    DIY Linux

hey anyone tried to use a build of Linux on their older computer? Care to share experience? I am currently running Lucid Puppy 5.01 on my 11 year old computer. Specs are as follows Pentium III "Katmai" 550MHz FSB 100MHz 512KB L2 Cache 256MB RAM PC133 Maxtor 20GB 3.5" 5400RPM HDD ATI Radeon 9250 GFX 256MB VRAM Am still a newbie poking around but so far i like what i experienced thus far. Am able to bootup in less than 30 seconds and functionality wise i am able to surf the internet (which was close to impossible in XP) I am still figuring out on the installing of apps part. So far, i am dependent on Puppy's Package Manager because i am still a dumbo in terms of compiling tarball packages into binaries for the computer to execute Terms like dependencies are beginning to get to me. Would like to discuss more with fellow explorative Linux user
  3. My PC is now semi crashing running on XP. A new copy of Win7 is 159. I don't want to shell out this amount for an OS that is going to get bloated. Worse, will slowly degrade thanks to the registry and the .DLLs. Then I looked at the Linux distros. They look good. I don't need to game anymore. The PC is now used for surfing, email, viewing Youtube videos, minor content creation with photos some videos and of cours the usual wordprocessor and spreadsheets. D/L'd Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala and ran it off the CD. Impressive. So I decided to look for something for an easier transition. Linux Mint 8 Helena is more like it. Still Windozey for the wife to transition to. Anybody taken the leap. I'm sick and tired of paying to M$ for failure and lousy security.
