  1. OK some info for all those utterly confused. OAT = Organic acid technology HOAT = Hybrid organic acid technology BASF makes many antifreezes for cars. Many types. Here are they: G-05 - Used in MB, BMW, Ford family including older Mazda and Volvo. HOAT based G-12 - Used in VW cars. OAT based. G-30 - Used in new VW cars. OAT based. Chemically the same as G-12 only different color. G-33 - Used in Citroen and Peugeot. OAT based. High reserve alkalinity! G-34 - Used in GM Europe (Opel) and SAAB. OAT based. G-70 - Formulated for Toyota. (Dunno where to get but sure looks good!) http://www.performancechemicals.basf.com/e...olants/products Toyota Red Long Life Coolant is loaded with phosphates and has no silicates. Honda Type 2 is also loaded with phosphates and has no silicates. Daihatsu will most likely use Toyota. Chevrolet will most likely be the same as G-34. New Mazdas (M2, M3, M5, M6) use silicate free system. Nissan also loaded with phosphates and no silicates. Mitsubishi most likely follow the rest of the Japanese, high phosphate no silicates. OK VW, SAAB and many "exotics" most likely have very expensive stock coolant with VW or SAAB name in it. So what to substitute with? Any OAT with no silicates in it. I would suggest either Prestone 5/150 or Caltex Long Life Coolant. These are easily available no silicates antifreeze with no VW or SAAB name or something. Whatever it is, DO NOT INTRODUCE SILICATES IN A SILICATE FREE COOLANT SYSTEM. OK what about Ford and all those that use G-05? You can get away with MB or BMW coolant. Now why they have some silicate, some phosphate, some amine, some nitrite? These chemicals offer speedy and fast passivation of metal surfaces should some micro crack happens. Viola! protect from corrosion. Pure OAT ones take very long time to protect. So can you use the OAT types like Prestone 5/150 or Caltex LLC in those requiring G-05? Yes, no problem. The reason why G-05 is used is because hard water cause problems with the pure OAT type coolants. Seems like deionized water is damn hard to find in Europe or something. But still G-05 is excellent as a product and if I'm not wrong, cheaper than the Prestone or Caltex OAT coolant. Are the three Japanese big makers Honda, Toyota and Nissan all the same? Chances are yes, they all want no silicate, high phosphate so you can quite use them interchangeably. Don't have Toyota, use Honda. Don't have Honda, use Toyota.
  2. Do you know which type of antifreeze and the amount you put into yr car cooling system - it's Propylene Glycol or Ethylene Glycol. The next time if you flush yr coling system please ask yr mech to put the Propylene Glycol - which is Envirometal Safe, corrosion resistance,provides better cooling and never wear out - very suitable for TC & SC engines and cooling system that are subjected to higher temp. opt.
