July 16, 2008 Snatch theft leaves S'pore granny in coma After hitting her head on kerb, she's now fighting for life, says daughter Madam Rosalind Tay arrived at the hospital about two hours after the incident, but at about 2am, she lapsed into coma and was warded at the Intensive Care Unit. -- PHOTO: THE NEW PAPER She may be 71 but she was a sprightly old lady. Now a snatch theft that turned violent has left Madam Rosalind Thong fighting for her life in hospital. She was robbed while walking home on Sunday night. It left her with severe head injuries and she later lapsed into a coma. Her daughter, Madam Veronica Tay, 46, related the incident to The New Paper at Tan Tock Seng Hospital. At 10.30pm on Sunday, Madam Thong was walking home form the bus-stop at Upper Thomson Road to her semi-detached house, a 15-minute walk away. She was returning home from Chinatown, where Madam Tay, 46, owns a foodstall. Madam Thong, who 'was frugal and preferred to take buses instead of taxis', had taken a bus home after collecting the day's takings from the stall. Said Madam Tay, who is also a marketing manager: 'When she was walking, a man on a motorcycle stopped by the side of the road and asked her for directions in Hokkien. 'Suddenly, he pulled at her gold chain, which was attached to a jade pendant with diamonds, and then he pushed her to the ground. 'She hit her head on the kerb and bled. The thief then rode off.' She said her mother was wiping the blood from her head with tissue paper as she walked home in pain. When she reached the house, where she lives with Madam Tay, she called the police. She also called Mr Andreas Yeap, a chef at the stall. Madam Tay, who was away in Sydney, said that after the police took her mother's statement, they called for an ambulance which sent her mother to TTSH. She arrived at the hospital about two hours after the incident, but at about 2am, she lapsed into coma and was warded at the Intensive Care Unit. Madam Tay said, 'The doctors said the right side of (Madam Thong's) brain is mashed up and her left side is weak and there was bleeding in the front and back of her brain. 'She cannot breathe on her own and has to be on life support. 'They said operating on her has high risks. They might have to remove large parts of her scalp in order to remove the blood clots and she may bleed to death.' She added that her mother was also likely to suffer memory loss after the surgery and may remain in a vegetative state. Police are investigating. Anyone with information should call the police hotline at 1800 255 0000. -- THE NEW PAPER http://www.straitstimes.com/Latest%2BNews/...ory_258208.html
