Although Miss International Queen 2020 went ahead, unlike many events cancelled around the world since the coronavirus outbreak emerged in China, the crowd was markedly smaller than in previous years, with many empty seats. Organisers had advised anyone who felt unwell not to attend. To allay worries, the entire venue in the seaside resort city of Pattaya was disinfected the day before the event by staff in protective suits. The contestants all had their temperatures taken with hand scanners before being allowed to go on stage in national costumes, swimsuits and glamorous evening gowns. Fluchaire hailed her victory as a win for all trans-women in Latin America. "This is for you, I made this for you," she said. The second and third place went to contestants Ariella Moura from Brazil and Ruethaipreeya Buanglee from Thailand. Thailand was the first country outside China to record an infection with the new coronavirus, but with only 50 cases recorded so far, it is no longer even in the 20 worst affected countries. With the infection rate slowing in China too, the Chinese contestant hailed efforts to stop the spread of the virus there. "I'm so proud of my country. It's like a lesson for everyone, for the earth, we can get through it," said the contestant, who gave her name just as Lacey to conceal her identity because of prejudice. The annual pageant the pageant was in its 15th year. Thailand has built a reputation as a place with a relaxed attitude towards gender and sexual diversity since homosexuality was decriminalised there in 1956. But activists say LGBT+ people face discrimination and stigma in schools, the workplace and health facilities, and are often rejected by their families.
  2. Great news for athletes! And well done to FINA for having taken what's in my own opionion, a difficult but absolutely necessary stand. I've always had the opinion that transgender women athletes have an advantage over their cisgender counterparts. Our bodies are made differently – males have more upper body strength and muscle mass than females. They've paved the way for perhaps the rest of the sporting world to "do the right thing" to protect the "natural world". And I don't think anyone should be called transphobic for saying I respect the gender in which you choose to identify in, but I disagree with the category you're swimming or competing in. This runs parallel with allowing transgender and women who have gone under the knives to compete in beauty pageants with natural women. If we disallow performance enhancing drugs to be used in a sporting event, then what about altering one's natural features and coming out tops in a beauty pageant? How fast are male swimmers relative to females? In summary, the comparative times/speeds are: 50m freestyle: men are 11.7% faster than the women with women completing 89.4% of their swim when the men finish 800m freestyle: men are 8.4% faster than the women with women completing 92.2% of their swim when the men finish 2008 Olympic 10 km: men were 6.8% faster than the women with women completing 93.6% of their swim when the men finish 2012 Olympic 10 km: men were 6.9% faster than the women with women completing 93.6% of their swim when the men finish 2013 world championship 25 km: men are about 6.9% faster than women with women completing 93.5% of their swim when the men finish 1 km ice swim: men are about 12.3% faster than women with women completing 89.0% of their swim when the men finish Read the article here.
  3. Big hooha and polarising views on this topic recently. What say you? Final decisions on use of hormonal therapy 'rest with clinicians and their patients': MOE, IMH SINGAPORE: Final decisions on the use of hormonal therapy "rest with clinicians and their patients", said the Ministry of Education (MOE) and Institute of Mental Health (IMH) in a joint statement on Thursday (Jan 21). This comes after an 18-year-old student said in a Reddit post on Jan 14 that the Education Ministry had intervened with her treatment, preventing her from obtaining a doctor's referral letter to begin hormone therapy. MOE denied these claims two days later, saying that it was "not true" that it interfered with the student’s hormonal treatment, and invited the student to approach the school to "clarify and discuss how the school can support his schooling better". https://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/singapore/moe-imh-intervene-hormone-therapy-ashlee-transgender-student-14011610

  5. When it comes to road safety, Russia roads are far from being the safest as proven by the many in-car camera videos that show road rages and other dangerous driving. To curb this problem, the Russian goverment came up with a list of pretty bizarre and discriminative set of rules which dictate who can hold a driving license. The list a very long one but highlights of how weird it is include not allowing transgenders to drive because they are deemed to have a 'medical condition'. Of course, the gay-rights activists around the world aren't too happy about this, but in 2013, Russia made 'promoting non-traditional lifestyles' illegal so it is doubtful the government will revise their rules. The list also includes banning drivers who have gambling and stealing problems. People with 'mental disorders' like fetishism, exhibitionism and voyeurism are also barred from driving. If you are too short, under 150cm to be exact, you are also not allowed to hold a driver's license too. We are glad we don't live in Russia!
