The brand with four rings has released details regarding its completely revised 1.8 TFSI engine, which will be fitted in the updated Audi A5 family. The turbocharged four-cylinder gasoline unit comes as the base engine for Europe, and is capable of delivering 170 horsepower and 320Nm of torque, while returning a fuel consumption figure of 5.7L/100km. This means consumption has been reduced by 21 percent compared with the previous model engine. The revised A5 emits just 134g of CO2 per km. Coupled with a manual transmission, the 1.8 TFSI accelerates the Audi A5 Coupe from zero to 100 km/h in 7.9 seconds on its way to a top speed of 230 km/h .

TC engines are about torque@rpm figures. No point flexing all the hp figures w/o looking at the overall car package.

Let's look at the torque figures:

Audi 1.8L TFSI: 320Nm @ 1400rpm ~3700rpm

Merc 1.8L TC: around 310Nm @ 2200rpm

BMW 2.0L TC: 270Nm @ 1250rpm (I know this is not apple to apple, but it's close)

In terms of acceleration and throttle response, you can see Audi & BMW is almost instant. For the Merc you got to push the 1.8L NA to 2200rpm before you feel the boost kicks in. IMO it's a far cry from the other 2 engines.

What can I say? I'm not a hp guy like most ppl. It's all in the twisting power call torque.

Why does Audi 'still have some catching up to do'? This engine looks really impressive overall and I doubt any of the other brands' 1.8s can match its fuel efficiency.

How are we already in June?

During lunch with my mother a couple of weeks back over yong tau foo, I was asked about my opinion on the latest NDP song. And of course, as expected of any chronically insular millennial, my reaction was: “Huh? There’s a new NDP song?” But of course there is. And I say this not to disparage the wonderful songwriters and musicians that provide an anthem to remember the nation’s birthday by annually, but to knock into my own mind the harsh reality: We’re already in mid-June.  It fe

    Movile Cave: Aliens on Earth

Picture this: a subterranean hideaway so exclusive, it's been sealed off from the outside world for a cool 5.5 million years. Yep, the Movile Cave is a strange alien universe right here on Earth, tucked underneath the Romanian coast.  It may be just 20 metres below ground, but the Movile Cave is about as alien an environment as you will find anywhere on Earth. With no interference from the plebeian air that we breathe and light that we see, the cave instead is a concoction of sulphuric
