https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1lXGmjt1FtQThere’s plenty to shout about when were talking about the new Civic Type-R as far as numbers go – 310 PS and 400 Nm from a 2.0 litre VTEC Turbo engine, a 270 km/h top speed and a 0-100 km/h time of 5.7 seconds is rather impressive.

Great on-paper numbers then, but what about real world performance? Honda has announced the Nürburgring lap time for the Civic Type R development car, and the magic number is 7 minutes 50.63 seconds, which puts the new CTR well ahead of the current front-wheel drive lap record holder, the Renault Megane RS 275 Trophy-R (7 min 54.36).

Alas, the CTR’s record run – accomplished during the final phase of pre-production testing – isn’t official, but the automaker says that development car’s technical specifications are representative of the final production car, with a standard state of engine tune and kit levels identical to the production car.

The only changes were the removal of equipment (air conditioning, the front passenger seat and audio equipment) to offset the additional weight of a full roll cage, which Honda says was installed specifically for safety reasons and not to add rigidity.

The development car used production-specification high-rigidity 19-inch alloy wheels, fitted with 235/35R19 road tyres developed especially for the car.

So, no new lap record for now, and Honda says it is planning to send a production CTR out to the ‘Ring' later this year with the aim of setting a new lap record for a front-wheel drive production car.

Why are car makers so obssessed with the ring and the timing on completing a lap?

Ppl are going to drive it on normal roads 90% of the time. It's not going to hop and bounce at ridiculous speeds. Why not make it a fun car instead of a hardcore track machine?

Its all about face value for boy racers

No one wants to buy a ctr and boast about FC or the aircon

Because it's a Civic Type R, and this is now expected of any car that prioritises performance. James May always affected to miss this point on TG, too.

  • Space: Large and Empty

Over the weekend I fell into a bit of a science-fiction/science rabbithole. You know, one of those when you click on ONE Youtube video and suddenly the whole Sunday afternoon is gone and your algorithm is all messed up.  Anyway, obviously there's tons of fascinating stuff about space and science and all that. Too much, really.  But one fun fact has stuck in my brain: All the other planets in the Solar System could fit between Earth and our Moon.  It seems crazy to think, consideri

Challenging myself to a week without coffee or sweetened drinks

Sometimes, the key to spicing up your life can take a very simple and mundane form. Or in the case of a challenge I embarked on in early-July, a bland and literally tasteless one. Feeling sometime in mid-June that I had been swept up too mindlessly by the push-and-pull of the everyday, and seeing that I *had* to reclaim some sense of agency with the way I lived, I eventually decided: I would allow myself only water as a drink. I'm pretty sure Yakun and Toast Box lost a fair bit o

Your next action film recommendation: Battle Los Angeles

I’ve always held a keen interest in the armies of the world, the wars that raged, and the weapons used. Therefore, I usually appreciate a movie (preferably an action film) if there’s an army element and lots and lots of bullets involved. Well, Battle Los Angeles (2011) doesn’t disappoint. With explosive battles and intense drama, you find yourself rooting for a group of resilient Marines tasked with defending Los Angeles from an alien invasion force. And yes, it’s on Netflix (for now), and
