Dudemobile Neutral Newbie October 31, 2005 Share October 31, 2005 (edited) Was driving on the ECP this morning. exit Marine parade at ard 100+. Road was still wet. found the car starting to understeer so turn the wheel slightly more. Next thing i knew i was slowly pointing to the inner curb while car was sliding like a rally car. Realised i was gonna approach the traffic light too fast this way so had to counter steer and straighten the car out. thank god for a good chassis, it didn't loose control when i shifted the momentum. Never realised could turn out this way with a front wheel drive car. Must admit if i didn't know how to control it, i would have been part of a lamp post or palm tree. it was the smoothest slide i've ever encountered. Reinforced my love for my Octy, saved my life again with such grace an elegance. Made a complete novice like me handle a near spin like a pro. Dudemobile Neutral Newbie October 31, 2005 Author Share October 31, 2005 (edited) funny thing is that the tyres are new, ard 2 mths old (falken tyres). they have served me very well. no complains abt them. besides my shock are getting softer on me nowadays. i knew i was taking it a bit too fast on a slippery road, but i was rushing. If uve ridden bicycle in the rain, u will find out how easy it is to slide the rear wheel out even if ure not spinning the pedals in the wet. Basically u drove too fast lah in the rain. Don't know what will happen when!!! Chassis is good..tyres are good..shocks are good..but if times are bad, what will happen?? Fortress Clutched October 31, 2005 Share October 31, 2005 Appreciate if you can share the spec of your tyres, T,H,V,Z etc. I do find situation like this using V and Z tyres on the Octavia and especially when it is very cold, ie, the 1st km or 2 on the tyres. I'm actually more careful now. 2.5 yr old beauty is not as agile as she was before..... Falken Digneo or something like that, realised that at low speed 60kmh the grip is very good. But the rear didn't slip out so much. more like the front had more grip than the front for it to still respond when i turned the wheel more. Luckily i did not step on the brakes at all during this adventure. Cos i've learned from a very experiences driver that you never apply brakes when you start to loose control of you car, go easy on the gas and work the steering. braking just looses all traction. Fortress Clutched November 2, 2005 Share November 2, 2005 That's alright. There are a few things you need to look at and it helps, besides the 196/65/15 thingy. Look at the 82V or 82T or 82Z stuffs, Z (ie more than 240kmh, many people just put them on)are for high performance cars and if you drive it during cold weather, especially in an Octavia using this, you will feel like you are tip toeing due to the lack of heat generated. Felt it this way, even with stock V tyres, ie, up to 240kmh(on an Octavia???). Oh... one more thing is the age of the tyre, there are 4 digits(not those you queue up for), eg 1504, means made on the 15th week of 2004. It is important to know as rubber aged and so called spoilt, rendering your tyre ineffective. hence I am very careful each time they goes on sales. Basically u drove too fast lah in the rain. fish tailing involves loosing traction on the rear, assiociated with weight transfer to the front not the rear like you mentioned. That's why there's aftermarket Front and rear lower Antiroll bar to distribute all this weight as evenly as possible ...
