Changing fuel filter

My car maintenance log recommend changing fuel filter at 40,000km ...

Was at a mechanic the other day and asked how much it cost to change the fuel filter.

He then proceed to tell me why there is no need to change fuel filter in Singapore.

His theory is that, in Japan, and other temperate countries, there's 4 seasons .... during winter, the water content in the petrol will freeze and thaw when driving ... these causes lots of contamination in the fuel tank when will be captured by the fuel filter.

In Singapore, there's no need to change till 5 yr old ... then explain to me that it's not that he dun want to earn my $$$, but he dun feel necessary.

Come to think of it, in my previous Sunny, there's no need to change the fuel filter at all !!

Comments guys ?

i'm not too sure about the bit regarding 'water content in the petrol' freezing, but the fuel filter is just meant to trap particles and keep the fuel to the engine clean.

i do think the quality of petrol in singapore is pretty good, but who knows what kind of residue or stuff there is in the petrol tanks at the various gas stations that could contaminate it?

changing the fuel filter as recommended by the manufacturer is probably cheap insurance against what could be worse damage - clogged injectors etc.

Well for my previous Alfa 33, the fuel filter come in a clear plastic casing & I can see the conditions of the filter (like looking at a stock AirFilter outside the Box)wink.gif so, as it wasn't contaminated, so didn't change over the years sly.gif.

Not too sure about those newer ones, like the one in my 01' Civic dizzy.gif will check with my friend from Tanly Motor thumbsup.gif

Can help me check where is it on the Stream 2.0L ?

For the Civic, it's on the lower part of the fuel inlet hole .. undercarriage, beside the fuel tank ... saw it when I saw a Civic jacked up ... didn't have a chance to see where is it on my Stream yet ...

Neutral Newbie

Andrew..

I rather follow the Car Handbook instructions. A fuel filter cost less then $50 if you get it from Distributors. My Rolla Fuel Filter cos only $36+ and it is very easy to change. Normally, it is located at the bottom of your backseat.

For $36, I rather change and ensure myself that I did a right thing for the car.

regards,
